Garden City, Kan. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State University Rodeo Team proved once again that they have their eyes on the prize. The men’s team had an outstanding weekend winning the rodeo with a total of 740 points, 218.4 points ahead of the second place team.

Will Martin was a huge part of the team’s success this weekend. Martin had a picture perfect weekend in the Bareback Riding winning both the long round and the short round. He therefore won the average and earned the 2018 Bareback Riding Champion title for the Garden City Community College Rodeo. Not only did Martin perform well in the Bareback Riding, the all-around cowboy was also present in the Steer Wrestling in the short round. Martin came into the short round in fifth place with a time of 5.3 seconds and was also fifth in the long round and the average as well.

Two more Panhandle State men were present in the Bareback Riding. Dylan Riggins was right behind Martin winning second in the long round, short round, and the average. Jade Taton was the third Panhandle State teammate in the Bareback Riding. Taton had a score of 69 points in the long round, which put him in the third and fourth place and was 70 points in the short round placing him third in the round and third in the average.

The Saddle Bronc Riding was dominated by the Panhandle State Rodeo Team as six out of the ten participants in the short round proudly wore the red and blue vest. Taton was in the short round in two events, the second one being the Saddle Bronc Riding. Taton split the first and second place in the short round placing him in a three-way tie for third place in the average race with his teammates Logan Hay and Sam Martin. Dawson Dahm won the long round with a score of 74 points and was sixth in the average. Preston Ogle came in third in the long round and finally Rowdy Chesser was the sixth Panhandle State member present in this event.

Callum Miller won the third place in the long round of the Bull Riding. Unfortunately Miller had no luck in the short round, but still won the third place in the average.

On the timed-event side of the arena, Nolan Richie made the short round in both the Tie-Down Roping and the Team-Roping. Richie had a time of 9.9 seconds in the long round placing him fifth in a tough round of Roping. Richie roped his second calf, but unfortunately his calf did not allow him to be as fast as he would have liked. Richie and his partner had a time of 6.9 seconds in the long round of the Team-Roping but had no luck in the short round.

Three Panhandle State women made it back in the breakaway roping. Erika Chartrand had a time of 2.8 seconds in the long round, which tied her for third and fourth in the round. Chartrand then roped her calf in 3.6 seconds in the short round placing her fifth in the round and fifth in the average. Hagen Brunson and Bridget Merrigan both had times of 3.3 seconds coming into the short round. Brunson roped her second calf in 5.3 seconds. Merrigan had a time of 3.3 seconds in the short round placing her sixth in the average.

Lastly, Lane Giovanetti and Sam Goings both made it back in the Steer Wrestling. Only at his second rodeo ever in the Steer Wrestling, Giovanetti did amazing in the long round with a time of 4.9 seconds placing him in a tie for third place. Goings had a good weekend in this event. He had a time of 5.6 seconds in the long round and then had a time of 4.7 seconds in the short round, which put him in a tie for the third place in the short round and earned him the fourth place in the average.

The Panhandle State Rodeo is proud of what they have accomplished this past weekend and plan on going right back to practice in the morning as they get prepared for the next rodeo in Weatherford, Okla. next weekend. The team is hard at work and plans on keeping the winning tradition alive!
