Team Ropers Take Over at Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

FORT WORTH, Texas — When Luke Brown swung his rope at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, he was just over 1,000 miles from the place of his birth.

Brown and his team roping partner Jake Long took the overall lead here with a total time of 10.2 seconds. They roped their first steer here on Sunday night and stopped the clock in 4.9 seconds to move into a tie for fourth place in the first round.

That set them up for their second competition on Monday afternoon. They stopped the clock in 5.3 seconds. Previously a three-way tie was the top of the overall team-roping leaderboard at 10.7, but Brown and Long took care of that.

While Brown didn’t grow up in an area known for rodeo, he moved west as quickly as he could to pursue his goals as a header. After high school, he moved to Big Spring, Texas, to attend Howard College. Knowing that Texas was a better place to rodeo from he now lives near Stephenville.

Brown and Long, who calls Coffeyville, Kansas home have teamed together for the last two rodeo seasons and have qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) together twice.

They finished second at the National Western Stock Show in Denver just a week ago and are already in the top five in the world standings. Any money they win at the legendary Fort Worth Rodeo will help them qualify for the 2018 NFR next December in Las Vegas.

J.R. Vezain from Cowley, Wyoming, moved into third place overall in the bareback riding with 251 points on three rides. Vezain also leads the first round with an 88.5-point effort.

Justin Miller, who narrowly missed last year’s NFR, is motivated to be there this year. He has an opportunity to get a good check here and will get to ride a fourth horse at the Championship Finals. Miller, from Billings, Montana has a total 246.5 points and is fourth overall.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues its 100th-anniversary edition Tuesday with performances at 2 and 7:30 p.m., in the historic Will Rogers Coliseum.
