Texas Tie-Down Roper Makes Big Move at College National Finals Rodeo

CASPER, Wyoming – Freshman tie-down roper, Ty Harris, from Cisco College showed the rest of the field that he means business when he competed at the College National Finals Rodeo on Thursday night.

Harris, who is from San Angelo, Texas, stopped the clock in 8.0 seconds to take the lead in the third round of competition. He has a 1.3-second lead over Nolan Sybrant from Hastings College who has a 9.3.

Not only is the ag business major dominating the third round, he has the fastest total time on three head and is looking good for a national championship. Harris has a total time of 25.5 seconds. That moved Shane Knerr to second place. Knerr is the Southwest Region student director and even though he hales from Montana, he is attending school at Texas Tech University – Lubbock studying to be a mechanical engineer.

Knerr is currently doing an internship at Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth building F-35 fighter planes. Regardless of how he finishes here, his focus on his future will serve him well.

There is a new lead in the round of breakaway roping and it happened in the blink of an eye. Taylor Munsell from Northwestern Oklahoma State University stopped the clock in 1.8 seconds to move to the top of the board.

Munsell didn’t connect in the first two rounds so knew her only opportunity to gain points for her team was on Thursday night. She went for broke and it paid off in a big way. She is a junior majoring in health and sports science. The first-time qualifier has the potential to learn from her experiences this year, come back next year and win a championship.

Competition continues at the Casper Events Center on Friday night beginning at 7 p.m. At the conclusion of the rodeo, third-round winners and championship finals qualifiers will be determined.
