Vieira, Alves Continue to Duke it Out at Finals

LAS VEGAS – Joao Ricardo Vieira notched 87.50 points in Round 3 on Dakota Style’s Hy Test to extend his lead in the world standings Friday at the Built Ford Tough World Finals.

World No. 2 Silvano Alves, meanwhile, jumped to the top of the event leaderboard with a 69-point effort on Here We Go Again, turning down a re-ride to become the only rider to have covered all three of his bulls.

“I wanted to ride a bull for 86, 87 points,” Alves said with the help of a translator. “I’m not the judge. I don’t understand how all of that works. But I feel like I did my job by riding three bulls. I thought that was better than trying for a higher score. I feel like I’m doing my part in riding the bulls.”

J.B. Mauney, the reigning World Champion earned a score of 90.25 points on Hou’s Back to win Round 3 and walk away with $25,000.

“That’s how I’m supposed to ride,” Mauney said. “I don’t know who the other guy is that’s been riding for me. I had been fighting my head before Finals. I just quit thinking. That’s what I needed to do – go back to having fun.”

Riding with a broken ankle, 2009 World Champion Kody Lostroh also put up a 90-point score to finish second on the night.

No. 3 Fabiano Vieira, No. 4 Guilherme Marchi and No. 5 Mike Lee failed to cover their respective Round 3 bulls.

Alves leads the event with 243 points, followed by Lostroh (179.25) and Matt Triplett (179.25), who are tied for second. Mauney sits fourth in the average with 178.25 points, followed by Joao Ricardo Vieira in fifth with 177.75 points.

Joao Ricardo Vieira now leads Alves in the world standings by 770.94 points, while Fabiano Vieira sits third, 1,164.38 points back.

Round 4 of the PBR World Finals takes place Saturday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. PT, and will air on CBS Sports Network at 9 p.m. ET.
