COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – There were seven competitions held worth a collective $860,504 Feb. 4-10. The biggest rodeo of the week was the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth, Texas, worth $667,267. It ended Feb. 9.

Steer wrestler Justin Shaffer stepped into the spotlight at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show with a 3.1-second time in the final round Feb. 9, breaking the arena record in the finale of the Will Rogers Coliseum. The previous record was 3.2 seconds, shared by ProRodeo Hall of Famer Byron Walker (1981), Lee Laskosky (1997), Stephen Canik (1998) and Beau Clark (2012). Next year’s Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show will be held in the new Dickies Arena.

Shaffer’s run was also the fastest steer wrestling time of the 2019 season.

Bareback rider Ty Breuer was one of two competitors to post the high ride of the week with an 89.5-point ride on Championship Pro Rodeo’s River Bugs. That ride helped Breuer win the Fort Worth average with 336.5 points on four head.

Winn Ratliff equaled Breuer’s feat with an 89.5-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Hollywood Hills to win the third round of Bracket 1 at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Feb. 9. That rodeo ends Feb. 23.

Saddle bronc rider Dawson Hay had an 89-point ride on Dakota Rodeo’s Cover Girl on Feb. 9 in the finals in Fort Worth.

The top time in tie-down roping for the week was delivered by Michael Otero (Feb. 4) and Adam Gray (Feb. 10), both in 7.1 seconds, at the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo, which ends Feb. 15.

The best bull riding scores of last week were 90-point rides by Foster McCaw (Feb.9) in Fort Worth, Texas, and Scottie Knapp (Feb. 10) in San Antonio.

McCraw’s 90-point ride came on Rafter G Rodeo’s Chosin One for $2,700. That vaulted him to win the average with 254 points on three head. Knapp’s ride came on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Big Time to claim the second-round title in Round 2 of Bracket 2 in San Antonio.
