Welsh Tops Loaded Field at San Antonio Xtreme Bulls

Welsh tops loaded field at San Antonio Xtreme Bulls

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Bobby Welsh wasn’t planning to hit the rodeo road hard this season, but that may have changed in just 16 seconds Saturday.

The Gillette, Wyo., bull rider captured the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Xtreme Bulls title with a score of 170.5 points on two head in front of a large crowd at the AT&T Center.

“I’ve never won the rodeo or the Xtreme Bulls here – I’ve been second at the rodeo a few times, but never won,” Welsh said, looking at his new buckle. “This is by far, in my opinion, the best rodeo as far as the people who put the rodeo on, the stock that comes and the best riders in the world.”

Welsh was one of a stacked field of 50 bull riders who were competing for the coveted title.

He rode for 83.5 points on Smith, Harper & Morgan’s Bad Black in the long round, which was good for fifth and a check for $1,974. Welsh then won the final round with an 87-point effort on D&H Cattle’s Fo Show to earn $6,204 more.

His average score was one point better than Cody Rostockyj’s 169.5. In total, Welsh left the arena with $22,278, which will move him from outside the top 50 in the world standings to somewhere near the top five.

“To be honest, I wasn’t even planning to rodeo very hard to make the (Wrangler) NFR this year,” Welsh said. “I told my wife I wanted to get through San Antonio and the spring and see how things go, and now it’s started off great so I’m going to see if I can pile up some money. I’m hoping my hips can stay feeling good, and I can make it through the summer all right.”

The 31-year-old has been battling hip issues for a few years, and limped out of the arena. However, nothing could wipe the huge smile off his face as he took one of the best the victory laps of his 13-year PRCA career.

“This is one of the top two buckles of my career, and this was one that I had on my bucket list before I’m done rodeoing,” Welsh said. “My family and I have been coming to this rodeo for a long time, and it’s become a home away from home for us. It really means a lot to win here.”

Other cowboys who collected a large chunk of money at the Xtreme Bulls event included Rostockyj, Dalan Duncan and Elliot Jacoby.

Rostockyj placed second in both the average and finals, and was fourth in the long go, which equaled total earnings of $18,612. Duncan was third in the average and collected a total of $11,797, while Jacoby pocketed $11,703.
