LAS VEGAS – A storm descended on the Las Vegas Strip when Stormy Wing (Dalhart, Texas), one of the PBR’s biggest surprises this season, got things started with a win in Round 1 at the Built Ford Tough Series’ Last Cowboy Standing at Las Vegas Helldorado Days Friday night at the Las Vegas Village.

Wing reached 8 seconds aboard Captain Jack (Julio Moreno/Dallas Schott) for 87.25 points on his way to his fifth BFTS round win of the year. Wing has ridden four of the last five bulls he has faced since the Tacoma Invitational last month.

The round win awarded Wing 125 world points and $10,000. Wing currently sits at No. 7 in the world standings with the chance to make a big jump up on Saturday.

Wing was one of 13 cowboys to record a qualified ride in Round 1, guaranteeing them a spot in Saturday’s Round 2. A minimum of 25 riders are required to advance to Round 2, meaning the remaining 12 draw spots will be determined by the world standings heading into Last Cowboy Standing.

If all riders buck off in Rounds 2, 3 or 4 then all riders who attempted a bull advance to the next round.

If there is more than one ride in the final round (Round 5), then the Last Cowboy Standing will be the rider with the highest-ride score in Round 5. If there are no rides in Round 5, then the Last Cowboy Standing will be the rider with the most round points who had competed in Round 5.

CBS will broadcast the final rounds of Last Cowboy Standing on Sunday, May 14 at 4 p.m. ET.

Brennon Eldred (Sulphur, Oklahoma) finished in second place when he covered Mortimer (Julio Moreno/Dallas Schott) for 87 points in Round 1. The ride was Eldred’s first on the BFTS since Round 2 in Tacoma, and he is competing in only his third BFTS event this season after making his debut in Billings, Montana.

Eldred picked up 75 world points and $3,500, moving him from No. 41 in the world standings to No. 35.

Eduardo Aparecido (Gouvelandia, Brazil), the current world standings leader, got back to form when he rode Calypso (Weber Bucking Bulls) for 86.75 points on his way to a third place finish Friday. Aparecido netted 60 world points for the round finish and $2,250. It was the first time he earned world points since finishing in ninth place in Glendale, Arizona, back in March.

Aparecido currently leads No. 2 Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil), who did not record a ride Friday but will advance to Round 2, by 945 points in the world standings.

Gage Gay (Staley, North Carolina) secured a fourth place finish in Round 1 after an 86.25-point trip aboard Cowboy Phil (Bar 3D Bucking Bulls) to advance to Round 2. The ride was Gay’s first since Round 1 in Tacoma, and it helped him pocket 50 world points and $1,500.

Brazilian rookie Claudio Montanha Jr. (Ribeirao Dos Indios, Brazil), rode his way to a fifth place finish after an 86-point trip aboard Hy Test (Phenom Genetics). Montanha, who is competing at his first PBR event in Las Vegas, earned 40 points toward the world standings and $1,250.

Two-time PBR World Champion J.B. Mauney (Statesville, North Carolina) took another step toward making history when he rode Tap Out (Bar T Rodeo) for 85.75 points to finish in sixth place in Round 1. The ride was Mauney’s 498th qualified ride and leaves him two away from joining 2004 PBR World Champion Mike Lee (Decatur, Texas) and 2008 PBR World Champion Guilherme Marchi (Itupeva, Brazil) as the only riders to record 500 rides on the PBR’s elite tour.

The riders who survived Round 1 will move on to Round 2 of Last Cowboy Standing Saturday night at the Las Vegas Village until only one remains as the Last Cowboy Standing.

The action from Las Vegas will begin at 8:30 p.m. PT on Saturday May 13.
