ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In a season filled with impressive rookies, it was an eight-year PBR Built Ford Tough Series veteran that stole the show as Stormy Wing (Dalhart, Texas) took Round 1 of the Ty Murray Invitational, presented by Isleta Resort and Casino, Friday night at WisePies Arena, aka The Pit.
Wing rode Switch Hitter (Halpain/Martinelli) for 88.5 points to win his first BFTS round of the season, and his first since last year in Duluth, Georgia. For the effort, Wing netted 100 world points and $3,580 as he jumped from 33rd in the world standings to 25th.
Claudio Montanha Jr.(Ribeirao Dos Indios, Brazil), one of the PBR’s latest Brazilian stars, covered Acting Crazy (Martinez Bucking Bulls LLC) for 87.75 points to finish second in Round 1. Montanha earned 60 points toward the world standings along with a $2,750 paycheck. He currently leads the 2017 Rookie of the Year race by 60.83 points over 2016 PBR Brazil Champion Dener Barbosa (Paulo De Faria, Brazil).
Stetson Lawrence (Trenton, North Dakota) and Troy Wilkinson (Upper Horton, Australia) tied for third place after recording identical 86.5-point scores. Lawrence reached 8 seconds aboard Juicy Fruit (Western Star Bucking Bulls), while Wilkinson rode Roll of the Dice (Halpain Bucking Bulls). The pair took home 45 world points and $1,650 each for the finish.
The ride was Wilkinson’s first ever on the BFTS, and it shifted the Australian up two spots in the world standings from No. 38 to No. 36.
Three riders scored 86.25 points to split fifth place in Round 1.
Guilherme Marchi (Itupeva, Brazil) brought himself even closer to history when he rode Parachute (Triplett Bucking Bulls) for a share of fifth place. The ride was Marchi’s 594th on the BFTS and leaves him six away from becoming the first rider in PBR history to record 600 qualified rides on the PBR’s elite tour.
BFTS rookie Cody Rodeo Tyler (Gutherie, Oklahoma) and J.W. Harris (Mullin, Texas) rounded out the three-way tie for fifth, with Tyler riding Vegas Lights (A Livestock) and Harris covering Chute Boss (Owens/Wyatt). All three riders pocketed 16.6 points and $633.
The Top 35 bull riders in the world will return Saturday night for Round 2 of the Ty Murray Invitational, presented by Isleta Resort and Casino. Each rider will face another bull in Round 2 as they jockey for position heading into Championship Sunday.
The Round 2 action will begin at 8:30 p.m. ET on PBR LIVE and the PBR LIVE app.
