By Charlie Coon – For those not old enough to remember the great Ben Johnson he was a graceful cowboy character actor who rarely showed a mean streak. When he did in the classic film “Shane” you knew there was a man you wouldn’t want to cross. Summit Pro Rodeo’s bull called “Ben Johnson” is calm enough to pet in the back pens but out of a chute gate he can be a holy terror. Texas bull rider Chandler Bownds got on big Ben at the Cody Stampede over the Fourth of July and that experience played a big part in Bownds’ trip Sunday night at the inaugural Cody Stampede Champions Challenge. Bownds kept his eyes on the prize and would not succumb winning the rodeo scoring 87.5 points with a rousing eight seconds by both cowboy and animal. Watch closely at the chute and you will see world champion bareback rider Kaycee Feild encouraging Chandler with vigor.
