Chason Floyd

Chason Floyd – Buffalo, S.D. ($71,192)
First-time WNFR qualifier
1-time RNCFR qualifier

A joke by his wife came to fruition for Chason Floyd and his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Chason married Jesika Garrett in 2015. He joined the PRCA in 2011 and she had a pretty good idea what she was getting into tying the knot with a steer wrestler. She had joked with him that she would likely be pregnant if he ever made the finals.

Earlier this year, they found out that they were expecting their first child. Chason’s immediate reaction was that he better start winning if he was going to be in Las Vegas for the NFR.

He qualified by the narrowest of margins, just $87 ahead of Josh Peek. He qualified in the 15th spot with $71,192 won during the regular season. He started out this year with a win in his home state at Rapid City, and that win made all the difference for him.

He was headed to the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo last January when he got the call that his grandmother was very ill. He was in Oklahoma and immediately headed back north. She passed away the next day.

A week later, he won the Rapid City Rodeo and over $3,000 with an angel watching over him. Chason and Jesika own an assisted living facility in Buffalo and that is where his grandmother was living.

The entrepreneurial spirit has served both of them well as they carried heavy loads so Chason could pursue a trip for all of them to Vegas. They are going o open another facility in nearby Faith, South Dakota, and are also involved in the families ranching business.

Soon after knowing his rodeo schedule was set for December, he started helping with fall cattle work at the ranch. That involved a lot of horseback riding and physical labor helping him stay in shape. Prior to the NFR, he will be at Sean Mulligan’s in Coleman, Okla., making final preparations for rodeo’s biggest stage.
