New Faces on Top in Colorado Xtreme Bulls

By Wrangler Network contributor Charlie Coon

Funny thing about rodeo. Just when you are sure the big names of a particular event are going to sweep under the competition a relative unknown or two will rise above the rest. Many of the top bull riders in the PRCA’s world standings – Kimzey, Teel, Breding and Bownds to pick a few – were there to compete at the Elizabeth Stampede’s Xtreme Bulls event southeast of Denver Friday night. It was won by a young man known by few of his contemporaries and another one just out of college and currently 48th in the standings riding a bull that has yet to be given a nickname.

Pro Bull Stats gives Bryce Barrios, a resident of Texas, a ranking of 996th among his peers. He was #1 in Elizabeth along with Ty Wallace from Collburn, Colorado and a recent grad of the college rodeo program at Odessa.

Barrios made a quick exit following his Friday night ride but Wallace stuck around to visit with us. Each man won more than $3,800 for their 88-point scrambles. We begin with Barrios on Honeycutt Rodeo Company’s Red Sky.

When you gather the majority of the Top 50 pro bull riders in the PRCA’s world standings you have to give them the opportunity to ride the best bucking bulls. Summit Pro Rodeo based in Wyoming and Colorado is lead stock contractor at the Elizabeth Stampede, and the event opens with an Xtreme Bulls competition second to none.

Summit calls on several other contractors to fill the bull field but it was one of their own that closed out the Friday, June 5th performance. He is called ‘Cross the Wyoming Line’ and he has proven time and time again that a little more than four seconds is about the best a rider can expect to keep a seat.

There was a pretty good storm earlier in the day so mud was thick and juicy in front of the bucking chutes. A bulging crowd of riders gathered to watch Jason Blasdel of Fruita, CO make his attempt.

The big, red bull was kept in wings until the last ride. Such is the treatment afforded a Superstar. Watch how vertical he brings that humungous frame and the closing salute from bullfighter Cade Burns who knows ‘Cross the Wyoming Line’ – while purchased on the Internet from a Michigan outfit – actually hails from Burns Rodeo Co. of Laramie, WY lineage. Summit Pro Rodeo’s Jesse Hill is in the straw hat on the flank.
