PRCA Standings Shuffle: 31 Move Up in Top 15

Aftershocks from Cowboy Christmas were felt during the second week of July as 10 ProRodeo competitions paid out a collective $690,915. With so much money up for grabs, 31 ProRodeo athletes cashed in to advance within the Top 15 of their respective events in the PRCA | RAM World Standings.

This lucrative period in the summer run can be a determining factor in the race to stay in the Top 15, and the impact it has will be felt when the regular season ends Sept. 30.

Cowboys know it’s easier to maintain a position at the top than it is to play catch-up when trying to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Every dollar counts, and making the Top 15 in the world standings early establishes a solid base and builds a cowboy’s confidence during the summer run.

Nobody knows this better than rookie bull rider Colten Fritzlan who jumped seven places, from 15th to eighth in the world standings. The 20-year-old Colorado cowboy is third in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings with $14,399 separating him from the top spot.

Fritzlan’s recent jump in season earnings all happened in Weatherford, Texas, where he picked up $2,189 by placing third at the Parker County Sheriff’s Posse Frontier Days Xtreme Bulls event July 7. He earned an additional $455 a few days later by tying for fifth at the Parker County Sheriff’s Posse Frontier Days and PRCA Rodeo.

Fritzlan made a statement early this season by winning the 2019 Permit Members of the Year Challenge in Las Vegas, Dec. 5.

The Lone Star State has been good to the rookie bull rider with four-figure checks picked up in San Antonio ($8,000) and Odessa ($5,322) this year. More recently, he won the Killdeer (N.D.) Mountain Roundup PRCA Rodeo, July 4.

Other cowboys to improve their position within the Top 15 last week include the following:

Cowboys on the bubble for a spot in the Top 15 can find themselves a few dollars short of qualifying for the NFR. There are plenty of opportunities to win big between now and the end of the 2020 season, so it’s noteworthy to see who is on the cusp of breaking into the Top 15.

Blake Knowles moved from 18th in steer wrestling and is $577 away from breaking into the Top 15.
Jake Finlay moved from 17th in saddle bronc riding and is $323 away from breaking into the Top 15.

More changes in the world standings are likely in the coming week, particularly for those competing at the National Circuit Finals Steer Roping in Torrington, Wyo. ProRodeo athletes are also likely to win big at the Spanish Fork (Utah) Fiesta Days Rodeo and the Division 1 Xtreme Bulls event that will be held there.

Fans can get their ProRodeo fix from home by tuning in to The Cowboy Channel or the PRCA on the Cowboy Channel Plus App. The Ute Stampede in Nephi, Utah, will be on both July 16-18 at 10 p.m. (ET). Spanish Fork’s Xtreme Bulls competition will air on the TV channel, July 20 at 10 p.m. The app will also have the Ute Stampede, July 16-18 at 10 p.m. and Kansas’ Largest Night Rodeo in Pretty Prairie, July 15-18 at 9 p.m.

The outcomes of these rodeos, and the rest, are sure to make an impact on the world standings, and possibly on who will qualify for the 2020 Wrangler NFR. Check back with ProRodeo.com next week to see who moved up within the Top 15 of the world standings.
