PRCA Standings Shuffle: 24 Move Up in Top 15

By Matt Naber

Cowboys continued to strike gold while earning some green during the third week of July. With 24 ProRodeo competitions offering more than $1.25 million in prize money, July 15-21 saw 24 cowboys move up within the Top 15 of the PRCA | RAM World Standings.

ProRodeo athletes have been cashing in on a weekly basis with more than $12 million in prize money on the table since the beginning of June:

June 3-9: $1.35 million
June 10-16: $954,326
June 17-23: $946,509
June 24-30: $2.07 million
July 1-7: $3.69 million
July 8-14: $1.82 million
July 15-21: $1.25 million

Cowboys know it’s easier to maintain a position at the top than it is to play catch-up when trying to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Every dollar counts, and making the Top 15 in the world standings during the summer run establishes a solid base and builds a cowboy’s confidence during the summer run.

Nobody knows this better than steer wrestlers Will Lummus and Stetson Jorgensen as both bulldoggers jumped five spots within the Top 15 last week. Lummus moved from 13th to eighth and Jorgensen moved from 15th to 10th.

Lummus’ move was thanks to placing fifth at the Snake River Stampede in Nampa, Idaho, for $6,353 and picking up $3,269 at California Rodeo Salinas.

Jorgensen’s move was made possible by placing third in Salinas for $4,515 and tying for third in Nampa for $5,050.

Lummus, 27, qualified for his first Wrangler NFR in 2018, placing in seven rounds to finish the year ranked third in the world standings. So far this season he’s won the 142nd Silver Spurs Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla., and the 71st Annual PRCA Rodeo in Crossett, Ark.

Jorgensen, 26, is working toward his first Wrangler NFR qualification since joining the PRCA in 2015. He ended the 2018 season ranked 38th with $37,601 and has surpassed that amount by more than $20,000 this season thanks to splitting the win at the Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up and the Annual Fourth of July Celebration in Window Rock, Ariz.

With some of the biggest checks on the line in the coming weeks, big jumps are sure to happen again.
