PRCA Standings Shuffle: Garrett Smith Climbs Inside Top 15

Garrett Smith knows what it’s like to compete on rodeo’s biggest stage. He qualified for three Wrangler National Finals Rodeos (2016-2017,2019), but hasn’t been able to stay healthy since.

His latest injury came last July, when we broke his right foot in four places. The injury required surgery and ultimately ended his year. The setback didn’t stop him from getting right back on bulls in 2022.

Smith has been on a tear on the ProRodeo trail the past week. In a two-day stretch, he not only claimed the bull riding title at the Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo, but he finished second at the Cactus Jack Xtreme Bull Riding in Uvalde, Texas.

Those two days of work earned him $14,589, bumping him from 25th in the most recent PRCA | RAM World Standings to now 13th. A run of success he credits to the animals he’s had the opportunity to climb aboard.

“Drawing good bulls, that’s really the reason for a lot of my success over the past couple of weeks,” said Smith, 27. “I was able to stay positive and just take things one bull at a time. It ended up all working out for me.”

In Guymon, he had a 91-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Gladiator’s Hammer to secure the title. It was a rematch from last year, where Smith wasn’t quite as lucky.

“That bull felt awesome, I was really excited for that rematch,” he said. “I fell off of him in San Antonio last year at the 7.8-second mark. So, I knew he felt good, and I knew he bucked. I was just glad to get him ridden and come out on top this time.”

As we enter the summer run, Smith has his sights set on returning to the Finals, but he knows there’s a lot of rodeo left. So, he’s taking things one bull at a time.

“You can’t think about it too much you just have to keep going one by one,” he said. “It’s way too early to start looking at the standings right now. Like I’ve always said the season doesn’t until Reno (Nev.) after that is when things start getting really good.”
