Reno Rodeo Contestants to Watch: Monday, June 24 – Fourth Performance

Rough Stock Events – Bareback, Saddle Bronc and Bull Riding:

Competition FormatBareback and saddle bronc riders have two full rounds. Their scores will be added together and the top 12 will advance to the championship finals. Bull riders ride once with the 12 highest scores competing for the championship.

All eyes will be on reigning Reno Rodeo bareback champion Tim O’Connell as he looks to secure his spot in the top 12 after his 81.5 victory lap was overturned by Clayton Biglow’s 86 reride.

Last night Joe Lufkin set a new arena record with a 91.5 on Flying 5 Rodeo’s Spring Planting, the same bronc he got bucked off of at last year’s Reno Rodeo. Nevada native Mitch Pollock will also be looking to earn a spot in the top 12 tonight after only receiving a 72.5 on his first ride.

Josh Frost of Randlett, Utah, is making a concerted effort to try and win the prestigious Linderman Award. To be in the running cowboys must win at least $1,000 in a minimum of three events and at least one of those must include one roughstock and one timed event. The third-generation PRCA cowboy’s main event is bull riding, but he is also a tie-down roper and steer wrestler. Fans may recognize the Frost name – his second-cousin was Lane Frost, a five-time NFR qualifier and world champion bull rider, who was featured in the movie “8 Seconds.”

Timed Events – Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Tie-Down Roping and Barrel Racing:

Competition FormatAll of the timed-events feature two full rounds of competition. Their times are added together with the 12 contestants with the fastest total times advancing to the championship finals.

Perhaps the stiffest competition of the night will be in tie-down roping where three of the top 10 will compete – No. 1 Michael Otero of Weatherford, Texas, No. 5 Tuf Cooper of Decatur, Texas and No. 10 Marty Yates pf Stephenville, Texas. Otero is coming off a few big wins in his home state taking the win at RodeoHouston and the San Angelo Rodeo. He is married to barrel racer Carlee Pierce-Otero, who will also be competing in Reno tonight.

Battle Mountain native Mindy Goemmer and her horse Fancy will be racing tonight in front of a hometown crowd as she vies for her spot in the Top 12.
