WACO, TEXAS – The cream rose to the top during the second round of the WPRA Card Holder Race at the 2021 World Finals in Waco, Texas.

Jordon Briggs of Tolar, Texas, and her 2021 WPRA Horse of the Year Famous Lil Jet made quick work of the cloverleaf pattern finishing in a time of 15.605 seconds. She set the bar early on as the 11th runner out on the day and it would take until run No. 116 to have a close threat in Jimmie Smith aboard A Valliant Nicky. Smith clocked 15.707 seconds to finish second. Emma Charleston aboard Makana, a horse that Stevi Hillman plans to have in her arsenal at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, was third in a time of 15.725 seconds.

Kylee Scribner, who won the first round was going for the win again in the second round and for not a downed barrel she would have taken the top spot. Her time would have been 15.580 but with the five second penalty it dropped her to 20.580 and 87th in the round.

Smith leads the average now with a two run time of 31.523 followed closely by two horses that have earned Horse of the Year accolades. Briggs is second with 31.561 and Dona Kay Rule and High Valor are third with a 31.586. The final round will be contested Sunday morning to determine the 2021 champion. All money won in the card holder race will be added to the individuals 2022 ProRodeo World Standings.

Laura Mote, daughter of four-time PRCA World Champion Bareback Rider Bobby Mote, blasted through the cloverleaf pattern aboard Reb Hot Redbull in the permit only race stopping the clock in 15.811 seconds to easily take the second round win and move to the top of the average leaderboard with 32.042 seconds. Suade Furr and Stackin Bills finished second for the second straight day in a time of 16.004. The duo are second going into the final round in a time of 32.107.

Heidi Gunderson won the 1D Futurity World Championship aboard Nacho Money Honey and finished reserve world champion on Coming In Haute. The Murdock, Minnesota, futurity trainer finished with 430 and 350 points, respectively. The 2020 1D futurity world champion, Teasin Dat Guy “Chewy” will race down the alley at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo next month with jockey Molly Otto. Maybe we will see Nacho Money Honey there in 2022.

Amanda Olson of New London, Wisconsin, won the Futurity 2D World Title aboard Red Smashed Cash with 90 points ahead of Wendy Platts and Beter Watchthis Guyz with 70 points.

Karen Gleason took home the Derby World title aboard Mobetta Fame with 235 points. In 2019, Gleason and Mobetta Fame shared the 1D Futurity World title with Colleen Vondra’s SCF Lakewood Fame in 2019 and narrowly missed out on the derby world title in 2020. Fortunately in 2021 Mobetta Fame etched its name in the record books and became only the second horse to win both futurity and derby world titles in the WPRA joining Hilary Van Gerpen’s PC Judge Cash N Lace in 2018 (futurity) and 2019 (derby).

World titles were also handed out in the roping division on Saturday night. Kelsie Chace defended her all-around title holding off Lari Dee Guy for the title. Lari Dee Guy did add her ninth world title in the team roping winning the heading title with partner Annette Stahl. Stahl picked up her third world title surpassing reigning world champion Whitney DeSalvo for the title. Beverly Robbins finished as the reserve world champion header.

Kari Nixon surged to the lead in the tie-down roping to capture her fourth world title over Tanegai Zilverberg, who finished as reserve world champion.

Junior roping member Josie Conner won the WPRA Breakaway Divisional Circuit National Title. One can bet that Conner’s goal for 2022 will be a qualification to the National Finals Breakaway Roping and winning the Resistol Breakaway Rookie of the Year title.
