Allan Defends Title in Pendleton

Pendleton, Oregon — The Pendleton Round-Up isn’t Cheyenne Allan’s hometown rodeo, but it’s close.

Only 95 road miles – about 70 miles as the crow flies – separate Mabton, Washington, and Pendleton, so it’s within proximity. Allan recalls the excitement of attending the Round-Up when she was a child, so winning it in 2018 was a dream come true.

Winning it again this past weekend is more icing on a tasty cake, but winning it on different horses in back-to-back years is incredible.

“It means more to me this year,” said Allan, now 62. “It really touches your heart and your soul to be able to accomplish it on different horses. I was really lucky in the long round that he was fast enough to come back and have a successful run in the short-go.”

She won last year’s title on RCA Mollys Honor, a sorrel mare that’s now 14. This year’s title was done on Streakin Honor Kid, a 15-year-old dun she calls Good One, a name that’s fitting for many reasons. She and the gelding actually did much better than “come back” for the championship round; They rounded the “Green Mile “pattern in 28.79 to finish second in the opening round.

They were then 29.09 seconds in the short round, finishing out of the top-four placers to earn money, but the two-run aggregate was worth the Pendleton title again.

“It’s really difficult to express your feelings when it means so much,” Allan said. “The older you get, the more you realize how special this is.”
