Alvarez Wins Round 1 of Debut Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Event in Kennewick, Washington

By: Kacie Albert

KENNEWICK, Wash. – As action got underway for the first-ever PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour event in Kennewick, Washington, Friday evening, no rider was more dominant than Alvaro Aguilar Alvarez (La Punta Lagos Moreno Jal, Mexico). As one of nine contenders to deliver a qualified ride inside the Toyota Center, Alvarez won Round 1 to surge to an early lead at the PBR Tri-Cities Classic.

Facing Gate Keeper (Howell Rodeo Company) as his first bovine athlete opponent, Alvarez was poised as he readied himself atop the chutes. Once aboard the powerful bull, Alvarez was in near-picture-perfect form, reaching the requisite 8 to earn an 87.5-point score.

Alvarez’s Round 1 win earned him 7 points in the race for the 2021 PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Championship.

Home state hopeful Cody Casper (Pacific, Washington) brought the raucous Evergreen State crowd to its feet compliments of his eighth-place effort in Round 1. He rode Teddy Bear (Big Bend/Flying Five) for 80 points to remain in contention to win the debut PBR Tri-Cities Classic.

Second was five-time PBR World Finals qualifier Gage Gay (Staley, North Carolina), earning 4 world points.

Gay proved the more dominant athlete in his showdown with Drifter (Big Bend/Flying Five), going the distance for an 86-point score.

Thor Hoefer II (Priest River, Idaho) was third in Round 1 inside the Toyota Center, riding Blue Stone (Ken Barnhart/Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) for 84 points. The score netted him 3 world points.

Rounding out the Top 5 and tying for fourth were Lane Nobles (West, Texas) and D.J. Parker (Ronan, Montana), each marked 83.5 points.

The duo of accomplished cowboys rode Crooked Nose (Big Bend/Flying Five) and Desperado (Big Bend/Flying Five), respectively, to take home 1.5 world points apiece.

Looking down the leaderboard, Wyatt Rogers (Coweta, Oklahoma), Bo T Vocu (Ashland, Montana) and Bob Mitchell (Steelville, Missouri) were the remaining riders to make the 8 on Friday evening.

Rogers covered Get Shorty (Heald Pro Bulls/Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) for 83 points to finish sixth, and Vocu was marked 81.5 points on Acting Crazy (Staci Wilks/N Bar Ranch/Clay Struve/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger) to conclude Round 1 in seventh.

In a business decision, Mitchell declined a re-ride opportunity in favor of keeping his 63-point effort aboard Fire Ball (Big Bend/Flying Five), positioning him ninth in the event ahead of Round 2.

PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour action from Kennewick, Washington, and the Toyota Center continues on Saturday, September 11, with Round 2 and the championship round. Action gets underway at 7:00 p.m. PDT.
