SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 27, 2015) — Semifinals two started at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo on Thursday night with lots of brothers cheering each other on.

It started when two-time college champion bareback rider Orin Larsen finished first with an 86-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Knight Rocket. That was worth $4,277 and put him at the top of the earnings category with a total of $7,698. His brother Tyrel watched and waited until it was his turn to compete in saddle bronc riding. Unfortunately, Tyrel, who also earned a college title in saddle bronc riding, finished one spot out of the money and has to win the round on Friday night to have any hopes of advancing to the finals alongside his brother. The brothers make their home in Inglis, Manitoba.

Team roping saw brothers Travis and Clay Tryan, from Billings, Mont., both earning money in the first round. Travis and his partner Dugan Kelly from Paso Robles, Calif., were the most successful tying for second with a 5.2-second run. Each team member earned $2,673.

Clay, the reigning world champion header along with his world champion partner Jade Corkill, from Fallon, Nev., finished fourth with a 5.4. That added $1,069 to their total. Travis and Dugan are second in the money standings. Clay and Jade are fourth.

Jake Wright, from Milford, Utah won the round of saddle bronc riding with an 83-point ride on C5 Rodeo’s Katie. The $4,277 he earned put him at the top of the earnings category with $7,984. Younger brother Spencer, also from Milford, finished in third with a 77. The reigning world champion earned $2,138 and is second in the money standings with $5,845.

The final pair of brothers didn’t earn any cash on Thursday but are ready for redemption on Friday night. Wyatt and Garrett Smith from Rexburg, Idaho, are competing at opposite ends of the arena. Wyatt is the defending steer wrestling champion here. This is Garrett’s first qualification to San Antonio’s rodeo. He will also be competing in Saturday afternoon’s Xtreme Bulls event with older brother Wyatt cheering him on.

Barrel racing continues to be electric here with Sherry Cervi and Sarah Rose McDonald both topping the $10,000 mark in earnings. Cervi from Marana, Ariz., won the first round of the semifinals with a 13.90-second run. McDonald from Brunswick, Ga., stopped the clock in 13.98 seconds. Cervi leads the earnings with $10,549 while McDonald has $10,051.

The second round of semifinals 2 starts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night where the final five final round qualifiers will be determined.
