Bryson Sechrist Swings into San Angelo Win Atop Spiderman

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Atop a horse called Spiderman, tie-down roper Bryson Sechrist hauled in $12,616 by winning the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo.

“My grandpa (Randal Sechrist) named him,” Sechrist laughed. “He was turning calves out and said he looks like Spiderman, and so that’s what we call him. I ride him everywhere I can, and he has been good at every setup. He’s small, but he has a big heart and knows how to adjust (to different arenas).”

Although the rodeo is done, there’s more San Angelo action in store with the Cinch Chute-out, which will air on The Cowboy Channel, Feb. 15 at 8:30 p.m. (ET).

The Apache, Okla., cowboy narrowly missed his lifelong goal of qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo two seasons in a row. Sechrist finished 18th in the 2016 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $58,516 and 21st in the 2017 world standings with $69,679.

“I just barely missed it before and stayed home last year and regrouped,” Sechrist said. “Now, I’m ready for this year.”

With a win worth nearly as much as his entire 2019 season earnings ($13,394), Sechrist plans on hitting the rodeo road full time this season.

“Winning this is really big and sets me up for the summer and gives me more confidence too since my goal is to make the WNFR this year,” Sechrist said.

Just making it to San Angelo’s final round was an accomplishment, as Sechrist’s 7.5-second run in Round 1 tied for third place with Caleb Smidt, who went on to win the all-around title with $10,409 in team roping and tie-down roping.

“This is one of the toughest rodeos of the year and toughest winter rodeos,” Sechrist said.

Although his run was slower in the final round at 7.9 seconds, Sechrist was a half-second faster than the No. 2 cowboy, which placed him at the top of the average with 24.8 seconds on three head.

“This is one of the biggest wins in my career,” Sechrist said. “It’s pretty close to being like the NFR because everyone enters here and all the top guys are here.”

Before his San Angelo win, the 27-year-old cowboy was outside the top 50 in the 2020 PRCA | RAM World Standings. The win will bump him up significantly in the world standings and in the ProRodeo Tour.

“This is huge and sets you up for the summer run,” Sechrist said. “I didn’t have much won before this.”

Other winners at the $437,692 rodeo were all-around cowboy Caleb Smidt ($10,409, tie-down roping and team roping); bareback rider Clayton Biglow (173 points on two head); steer wrestler Matt Reeves (12.4 seconds on three head); team ropers Aaron Tsinigine/Kyle Lockett (13.7 seconds on three head); saddle bronc rider Zeke Thurston (176 points on two head); barrel racer Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi (44.15 seconds on three runs); and bull rider Tim Bingham (160.5 points on two head).
