Busy Weekend of Rodeos

While not a normal second week of June rodeo schedule that we are all used to, it was the busiest weekend of rodeo since everything came to a screeching halt in March. A total of five PRCA/WPRA rodeos were contested over the weekend from Utah, to Texas, to Oklahoma and Arkansas. Contestants across the country were excited and thankful to have a few places to travel to.

The Woodward (Oklahoma) Elks Rodeo kicked off the weekend run of rodeos starting with slack on June 9 and WPRA members had the opportunity to compete in both barrel racing and breakaway roping. Three-time Wrangler NFR barrel racer Cheyenne Wimberley set the bar high in early action stopping the clock in 17.06 seconds. It wasn’t until the final performance that her time would be tested with Paige Jones stopping the clock in 17.07 seconds. Brittany Diaz rounded out the top 3 with a time of 17.12 seconds. Wimberley qualified for the 2019 Wrangler NFR after having first qualified in 1997 and 1998. She added $4,335 to her 2020 world standings.

Fans in Woodward got to experience women’s breakaway roping at their rodeo for the first time with WPRA World Champion Lari Dee Guy taking home the inaugural title in a time of 3.0 seconds. Guy of Abilene, Texas, competed on the final night and brought her A-game showing everyone how good women’s breakaway roping can be. Randi Holliday had held the lead with a 3.2-second run through the majority of the event until Guy backed into the box and roped her calf on Saturday night. Guy added $2,677 to her standings while Holliday pocketed $2,327.

The Mesquite (Texas) Championship Series continued for a second consecutive week with Amber Crawford winning the breakaway roping in a time of 2.2 seconds. Martha Angelone and Brandy Gilbert tied for second in a time of 2.5 seconds. Finishing atop the barrel racing leaderboard in Mesquite this weekend was Jill Wilson in a time of 15.42 seconds with Maci Ray hot on her heels in a time of 15.43 seconds.

Wenda Johnson took advantage of the rodeo in Coleman, Texas, winning the barrel racing in a time of 16.31 seconds to outdistance two-time world champion Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi, who finished with a 16.51 second run. Johnson added $2,801, while Pozzi Tonozzi added $2,381 bringing her 2020 total to $67,144 at just 13 rodeos.

Utah got back in the rodeo mix for 2020 with the Pony Express Rodeo in Eagle Mountain and Lake Mehalic made it count winning the barrel race in a time of 15.70 seconds. Four-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Amberleigh Moore and 2018 Wrangler NFR qualifier Jessica Telford tied for second in a time of 15.76.

The State of Arkansas also joined the State of Utah kicking open the chutes for the first time since March in Ash Flat. Lacinda Rose led the pack finishing with a 16.36, while Lindsey Nixon took second in a time of 16.45. WPRA World Champion Fallon Taylor finished fourth in a time of 16.51.
