The man behind the weights of the Vintage Tractor Pull

Barrie Jung represented the true spirit of “Greatest Together” more than 22 years ago when he answered the Calgary Stampede’s call for a weighted sled – a key piece of equipment for the fan-favourite Vintage Tractor Pull event.

Celebrating restored, vintage tractors built before the 1960s, such as John Deere, Minneapolis-Moline, Case, Oliver, Cockshutt and Farmhall, this event demonstrates their power and grit as they compete to pull the weighted sled the furthest in six different weight classes. Caring for these vintage tractors is a labour of love, taking hours of work and mechanical know-how to keep them in tip-top shape. While they might look old, these beauties “pull” as well as ever.

And, like many who grew up on farms in western Canada, Jung, who hails from Milford, Saskatchewan, is reminded of amazing memories when seeing the tractors of the Vintage Tractor Pull event. Jung often recalls his fond childhood memories of his father’s tractor.

“My dad had an old Cockshutt, which we painted pink and called the Pink Panther Puller,” he said.

With deep roots in tractor pulling, Jung has competed in many pulls over his career, throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta. He got his first taste for vintage tractor pulls in 1980 when the event came to his town and he was hooked.

Jung had only competed at the Calgary Stampede for a couple of years when he answered their call for a weighted sled. Also a vintage piece of equipment, he often fixes it up with his brother to get it ready for the competition.

Many may think it is simply a case of tractors vs. weights, however, Jung sees it from the other side of the competition, manning the weighted sled. He controls all the mechanics of the sled and needs to know just what to do to keep the competition interesting.

“My job is to stop the tractors, and their job is to pull through,” Jung said.

Weighing a total of 18,000 lbs, the sled works by transferring weight from the back to the front, creating resistance as the tractors pull it forward.

“I have certain adjustments I can make on the weight box,” Jung says. “There’s a five-speed transmission to get the weight box up faster or slower, depending on the ground and track and on the front, there’s a series of holes that moves the chain up and down which changes the draft.”

Jung uses these controls to keep every pull unique and challenging.

The tractor pulling circuit happens across Canada throughout the summer, but to Jung, “The Calgary Stampede is the highlight of my year, all thanks to the people who make it all it is.”

Don’t miss Jung and the Vintage Tractors on Monday from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Nutrien Western Event Centre.
