Champions Crowned at Caldwell Night Rodeo

Champions crowned at Caldwell Night Rodeo

CALDWELL, Idaho – Aug. 16, 2014 – With over a quarter of a million dollars in prize money, top contestants from the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, the Caldwell Night Rodeo is supposed to be exciting.
Fans at the championship finals weren’t disappointed. A near capacity crowd saw the fastest run of the whole rodeo when Nancy Hunter from Neola, Utah, tied the arena record at 17.01 seconds, earning her fourth championship in five years. She added $7,274 to her WPRA standings where she is currently fourth and on top of her trusty gelding “Fuzz” is headed to her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Luke Creasy wants to make the trip to Las Vegas in December to compete in the bareback riding as well and came one step closer here. He was 86-points on Powder River Rodeo’s Georgia Girl to win both the final round and the championship. Creasy was outside of the top 15 by $7,606 prior to the Caldwell Night Rodeo.

He earned $7,399 here and closed the gap significantly. This is just the fourth rodeo that the Canadian native has won this season and one of the most important. Creasy now makes his home in Lubbock, Texas, where he graduated from Texas Tech.

“This couldn’t have come at a better time,” Creasy said. “I’m so grateful and thankful that I’m on fire right now. The crowd here was amazing and when they get fired up we get fired up.”

It was a sold-out crowd with standing room only tickets that cheered on all of their favorites including Brandon Beers and Jim Ross Cooper who won the team roping. Beers lives in Powell Butte, Ore., now but was born in Caldwell and lived here until he was seven-years-old.

“This is like a hometown rodeo for me,” he said. “Everywhere I went I saw people I knew and I could hear them yelling my name when I made that victory lap afterwards.”
Beers did the heading for Cooper who is from Monument, N.M. They had a total time of 14.5 seconds to win $5,434 each. They have been the hottest team going down the road since June and were one of two Cheyenne Frontier Days Champions to earn titles here.
K.C. Jones from Decatur, Texas, also used his momentum from Cheyenne to keep winning. He got the championship spurs in the steer wrestling with a total time of 15.5 seconds to win $6,820.

Two world standings leaders earned titles here. Tuf Cooper from Decatur, Texas, had a total time of 25.0 seconds to win the tie-down roping and added $7,814 to his season earnings. The saddle bronc riding title went to Taos Muncy from Corona, N.M., who had earned money here in the past but never gotten the title. He had a total score of 165 points on two rides to earn $5,886.

Reid Barker rode two bulls to a total score of 169 points and finished the night with $8,609 making him the high-money earner of the rodeo. This came just a month after he and a bull collided at Casper, Wyo., causing pretty serious injuries. Barker was fourth in the world standings at the time of the accident, dropped to sixth but with successful rides like he had here will be climbing back up.
