Clayton Sellars Splits the Win at All-Florida Championship Rodeo

By Tracy Renck

ARCADIA, Fla. – Just missing on qualifying for the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo has been a great motivator for bull rider Clayton Sellars.

The Florida native is on a mission to make his Wrangler NFR debut in 2019, and he took a small step toward that goal by splitting the win at the 91st annual Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo, which ended Sunday.

Sellars had an 87.5-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Dark Moment to tie Daylon Swearingen, who had the same score on Frontier Rodeo’s Charlie.

“I had never ridden that bull before, but I had seen him around,” said Sellars, 20. “He was a good bull, and it was like another day at the office for me.”

Sellars made his ride in Arcadia on March 8, and for his performance he earned $3,911.

“I have been fired up since the beginning of (the 2019 season), and it (missing the Finals) will not happen again, I can promise you that,” said Sellars, who found out he shared his first-career Arcadia victory March 10.

Last season, Sellars won the PRCA | Resistol Rookie of the Year honor in bull riding but finished 19th in the 2018 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $90,863 – $3,533 behind Trevor Kastner, who finished in the No. 15 spot.

“I learned a lot from last year, and the biggest thing for me is to keep my head clear and take care of business,” Sellars said. “I do love traveling down the PRCA road. It is better than I even thought it would be, and I know if I keep my head clear and stay healthy and keep a goal in front of me and not be satisfied that I can make it to the NFR.”

Sellars wasn’t making any excuses for not making the Wrangler NFR last year.

“I think I just worried about the guys behind me,” Sellars said. “Those guys are all darn good, and I let that get to me, but I’m not going to let that happen to me again.”

Sellars is having a superb winter run, leading the world standings with $59,406. The Arcadia win will add to that total, and Sellars is confident he will earn more at RodeoHouston. He’s competing in the semifinal in Houston, March 14, where the bull riding winner will take home $50,000.

“I want to win Houston for sure,” said Sellars, who moved to Stephenville, Texas, six months ago.

Other winners at the $118,072 rodeo were all-around cowboy Dawson Cantu ($2,346, tie-down roping and team roping); bareback rider Taylor Broussard (88.5 points on Frontier Rodeo’s Memphis King); steer wrestler Mose Fleming (10.6 seconds on two head); team ropers Jacob Dagenhart/Zack Mabry (4.8 seconds); saddle bronc riding Cody DeMoss (89.5 points on Frontier Rodeo’s Big Rocket); tie-down roper Alex Caudle (10.0 seconds); and barrel racer Emily Efurd (17.48 seconds).
