Cody Wright Back in Form at National Western Stock Show Rodeo

DENVER – If the way he is riding at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo is any indication, saddle bronc rider Cody Wright from Milford, Utah will be headed to his 15th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) next December.

Cody, his brother Spencer and son Rusty all rode at the ninth performance in the Denver Coliseum on Tuesday night representing their home town of Milford, Utah. Cody had the high-marked ride of the rodeo at 81 points and is now tied for second in the first round. His success came aboard Summit Pro Rodeo’s Spider Woman.

Spencer and Rusty both had 78-point rides which is unlikely to get them checks in the first round. However, all three of them have their second-round horses here at the Wednesday afternoon performance. They each have another opportunity to place in that round and with good scores could be among the top 12 saddle bronc riders that advance to the U.S. Bank Championship Finals on Sunday.

A shoulder injury at the 2014 NFR kept Cody out of action for a big part of the season last year. He finished 20th in the world standings, outside of the top 15 who compete in Las Vegas at rodeo’s championships. Rusty made his first trip there last December and he and Cody are trying to become the first father-son duo to qualify for the NFR.

Splitting up the Wright trio on Tuesday was Curtis Garton, a native of New Zealand who was 79. Garton also is hoping to make history with an NFR qualification as the first qualifier to represent his homeland.

Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association action continues in the Denver Coliseum on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
