Cort Scheer Wins St. Paul Rodeo with Record Ride

ST. PAUL, Ore. – Big Bend Rodeo’s Kool Toddy has quite the resume.
The saddle bronc horse is a multiple-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and perennial contender for horse of the year.
She didn’t disappoint veteran cowboy Cort Scheer at the St. Paul (Ore.) Rodeo, a ProRodeo Tour stop.
Sheer had an 89-point rodeo ride on Kool Toddy to win the St. Paul Rodeo for the first time, setting a rodeo record in the process.
“It feels great to break that record, and it is awesome to win this rodeo,” said Scheer, 33. “This is probably one of the coolest rodeos during the Fourth of July, and that rodeo gets better and better because that committee works its rear-end off to make it better for the cowboys.
“That horse has been amazing for years. I’ve been on that horse four or five times now and she has been unbelievable every time. I was stoked when I heard I had that horse. She pretty much did all the work.”
The saddle bronc riding record at St. Paul was 88 points shared by Cody Wright (2003), Matt Marvel (2007) and Bradley Harter (2011).
Scheer earned $10,758 for his performance. The Nebraska cowboy was 29th in the July 2 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $22,509. Lefty Holman had an 89.5-point ride on Kool Toddy in the final round at the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo, which vaulted him to the average win on three head.
“I think she was even better with me,” said Scheer, who made his ride July 4 in St. Paul. “Sometimes she will stall a little bit, but she hardly stalled. She turned out of there and was all a guy wanted for a bronc.”
Scheer has qualified for the Wrangler NFR six times – 2010, 2012-15 and 2018. He finished a career-best second in the world standings in 2014.
“About three weeks ago, I broke three ribs and cracked one, so I’ve been a little bit behind because I took some time off,” Scheer said. “My ribs are feeling great now, and it is just a matter of taking it one horse at a time and just hope I keep drawing good. I’ve drawn really nice over the Fourth and capitalized on a few of them. It is one horse at a time and let the chips fall where they fall and give the glory to God, and if he wants to make the Finals, I will make it.”
This week Scheer also tied for second place at the Oakley City (Utah) Independence Day Rodeo and earned $2,381, placed third at the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede to earn a $4,698 check and was third at the Molalla (Ore.) Buckeroo Rodeo to collect $2,113.
“My goals this year are to make the Canadian Finals and the NFR,” Scheer said. “Then go for the top when you get there.”
Other winners at the $375,112 rodeo were all-around cowboy Stetson Wright ($16,806, saddle bronc riding and bull riding); bareback rider Trenten Montero (87.5 points on Korkow Rodeo’s Onion Ring); steer wrestlers Riley Duvall (8.8 seconds on two head) and Blake Mindemann (8.8 seconds on two head); team ropers Erich Rogers/Paden Bray (10.3 seconds on two head); tie-down roper Jake Pratt (18.5 seconds on two head); barrel racer Amberleigh Moore (17.29 seconds) and bull rider Boudreaux Campbell (90.5 points on Corey & Lange Rodeo’s Tequila).
