Cowboys Recall First ProRodeo Victories

Four-time World Champion Steer Roper Rocky Patterson, All-Around World Champion Ryan Jarrett and saddle bronc rider Allen Boore have a combined 57 years of ProRodeo experience.

All three cowboys did a recent interview with ProRodeo Sports News about looking back on their first ProRodeos. Those interviews morphed into various avenues of their ProRodeo careers.

Some of that stuff was too good to leave on the cutting-room floor, so we’re spilling it over to ProRodeo.com for your enjoyment.

And don’t forget to check out the Feb. 19 digital edition of ProRodeo Sports News to see what they remembered about their first rodeos.

Saddle Bronc Rider Allen Boore

Age: 29

NFR Qualifications: 2 (2016, 2020)

Career Earnings: $647,450

First ProRodeo: Days of the Old West Rodeo in Delta, Utah (2010)

First ProRodeo Win: ABC ProRodeo in Lubbock, Texas (2012)

PSN: What do you remember about your first ProRodeo win?

Allen: My first win was in Lubbock, Texas in 2012. I had Beutler & Son’s No Date Kate, and she was in the NFR’s eliminator pen a few years before then, so I was hoping for the best. I was able to make a good ride (83 points) and won the rodeo.
At that point it seemed like you’re on top of the world. I only won like $1,300, but it felt like it was all downhill from here, but it turns out it wasn’t. There was still going to be some hard ones.

Tie-down roper Ryan Jarrett

Age: 37

NFR Qualifications: 13 (SW 2005; TD 2005-06, 2009-13, 2015-18, 2020)

World Titles: 1 (all-around, 2005)

Career Earnings: $2,327,774

First ProRodeo: Possibly 2003 Silver Spurs Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla.

First ProRodeo Win: Possibly 2003 Silver Spurs Rodeo

PSN: You were the 2004 steer wrestling rookie of the year and the 2005 All-Around World Champion, but at what point did you start to feel established and no longer the new guy?

Ryan: It probably wasn’t until the end of 2005 – it came on pretty fast as far as me rodeoing and winning and shimmying right up the ladder. I’ll never forget after the (2005) Fourth of July run we were leaving St. Paul, Ore., and I won the all-around there and I won like $20,000 over the Fourth. We were pulling out at 11 p.m. when I called my dad, but it was 2 a.m. in Georgia and he was all startled when I called.

Steer roper Rocky Patterson

Age: 55

NFSR Qualifications: 26 (1994-95, 1997-2020)

World Titles: 4 (steer roping, 2009-2010, 2012, 2016)

Career Earnings: $1,570,653

First ProRodeo: Odessa or Pecos, Texas

First ProRodeo Win: Possibly in Pecos, Texas

PSN: What do you remember about your first ProRodeo win?

Rocky: My first win might have been in Pecos, Texas, in 1994 or so (placed second in 1994, won in 1995).

It was pretty exciting. Any time you win one is a good feeling.

In the steer roping there isn’t any ducking off. Anytime from back then to now everyone is going to be there. It’s not like you’re going to a little $500 added circuit rodeo. You know when they only have 50 rodeos a year with tripping you’re going to be roping against the best guys in the world wherever you go.

Then in 1994 it was the first time I made the Finals. I had a chance to win the average but the steer kicked and strained and I was second place, but that was a pretty good memory.
