TEAM ROPERS SMITH, CORKILL TIE ROUND 5 RECORD

After experiencing a dry spell at the 2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, team ropers Clay Smith and Jade Corkill found glory Monday night. Smith and Corkill stopped the clock in 3.6 seconds at Globe Life Field, which also tied the Round 5 NFR record set in the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Smith and Corkill now share the record with Garrett Tonozzi and Kinney Harrell (2006) and JoJo LeMond and Cory Petska (2010). Smith and Corkill are both third in their respective world standings with $116,934 each.

TY WALLACE WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE GO-ROUND

Bull rider Ty Wallace arrived at Globe Life Field searching for his first Wrangler NFR go-round win since 2015. Now, the Colorado native has two in a row. A day after winning Round 4 with an 89.5-point ride on Hi Lo Pro Rodeo’s Lipps, Wallace won again in Round 5, posting a 91.5-point ride on Rafter G Rodeo’s Freddy Fender. This is Wallace’s fourth career trip to the NFR. He also qualified in 2014-15 and 2017. However, the last two years have been sabotaged by injuries. Ky Hamilton is first in the world standings with $163,331, but Wallace is on Hamilton’s heels with $162,253.

KINSEL CLIMBS RAM TOP GUN STANDINGS WITH THIRD GO-ROUND WIN

It’s safe to say barrel racer Hailey Kinsel is on a heater. The Cotulla, Texas, cowgirl won her third round of the 2020 Finals – winning Round 5 with a 16.92-second time, the fastest of this year’s Wrangler NFR. She also won Round 1 in 17.18 seconds and Round 4 in 17.09 seconds. She placed second in Round 2, also in 17.09 seconds. Kinsel acknowledged her standout horse, Sister, keeps getting better at Globe Life Field. Kinsel leads the barrel racing average by 0.65 seconds with 85.91 seconds on five runs and is at the top of the RAM Top Gun Standings with $109,423. Saddle bronc rider Wyatt Casper is in the No. 2 position with $88,692.

NEWS & NOTES

Bareback rider Jess Pope drew Hi Lo Pro Rodeo’s Wilson Sanchez, the same horse that Tanner Aus won Round 2 on with an 87-point ride Dec. 4. Jake Brown won Round 5 of the 2016 NFR with an 89-point ride on the horse. In September, Blaine Kaufman won the first round of the RAM NCFR with an 89-point ride on the horse.

Clements also has a solid draw for Round 6 with Frontier Rodeo’s Night Fist. Orin Larsen won Round 4 of the 2019 NFR with a 90-point ride on Night Fist. The horse also took Clayton Biglow for an 88-point ride to split the win during Round 6 of the 2017 NFR.

Meanwhile, Stetson Wright could see a change of luck in saddle bronc riding tonight as he’s set to ride Mo Betta Rodeo’s Sue City Sue, the only saddle bronc responsible for two go-round wins at the 2019 NFR – Zeke Thurston with an 88-point ride in Round 1 and Dawson Hay with an 88.5-point ride in Round 6. Sue City Sue also took Cort Scheer on an 89.5-point ride to tie the Round 6 record at the 2018 NFR.

Chase Brooks is set to ride Outlaw Buckers Rodeo’s Lunatic Party, the same bronc he won Round 3 on with a 90-point ride at the 2019 NFR, tying that go-round record.

Bull rider Ky Hamilton drew Stockyards Pro Rodeo’s Silver Lining, the same bull that Stetson Wright won Round 1 on with a 90.5-point ride Dec. 3.

Meanwhile, Clayton Sellars drew Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Bumble Bee, the same bull Jordan Spears posted a 91-point ride on to win the 2019 Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.
