Dougherty Wins Round 1 of Wrangler Long Live Cowboys Classic in Sacramento

By: Mandi McCary

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – As Round 1 of the Wrangler Long Live Cowboys Classic concluded on Saturday night at Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento, Chase Dougherty (Decatur, Texas) claimed his fourth round win of the 2021 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Unleash The Beast (UTB) season.

In a field of 65 riders split across two nights of competition for the opening round, Dougherty’s Friday-night ride aboard Kent’s Wildside (4B Bucking Bulls) clinched the Round 1 win.

With the highest ride score of the entire two-day extended round at 90 points, the 23-year-old Texan earned 29 world points for his efforts.

Starting the weekend at No. 15 in the world standings, he now moves up one spot to No. 14.

Fellow Texan and 2016 PBR World Champion Cooper Davis (Jasper, Texas) finished in second place courtesy of his 89.75-point ride aboard Mr. Winston (Dakota Rodeo/ Mark Baker/ Clay Struve/Chad Berger), also from Friday night as Round 1 began.

For his efforts, the steadfast World Champion and current No. 3-ranked bull rider in the world collected 18 world points, thus closing the gap between himself and the No. 2-ranked/2018 PBR World Champion Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) to 98 points.

Reigning PBR World Champion and current world leader Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil) and young gun Austin Richardson (Stephenville, Texas) shared third place in Round 1 with matching 89.5-point ride scores.

On Friday night, Leme delivered an electrifying 89.5-point ride aboard 4B Special (4B Bucking Bulls).

His ride score of 89.5 fell just short of the 90 points he needed to surpass 1999 PBR World Champion Cody Hart’s single-season 90-point ride record. He is tied with Hart’s record of 16 in one season.

Collecting 16.5 world points, the No. 1-ranked man still significantly leads No. 2 Pacheco by 419 points in the world standings.

Richardson attempted to ride Stranger Things (Tugger X Bucking Bulls) early on in Saturday night’s continuation of Round 1 but was awarded a re-ride by officials.

His later matchup with Tin Star (Julio Moreno Bucking Bulls) proved victorious as the round came to a close, also earning him 16.5 world points.

Richardson began the Sacramento weekend at No. 26 in the world and has now moved up one spot to No. 25.

Rounding out the Top 5 of Round 1 was 2019 PBR Rookie of the Year Dalton Kasel (Muleshoe, Texas), who was paired with Not Today (Nancy Haverty/ Clay Struve/ Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger) on Saturday night to receive an 89-point ride score.

Kasel, who arrived in California as the No. 28-ranked rider in the world standings, collected 15 world points for his fifth-place finish, moving him to No. 27.

The best bull riders in the world will return to Golden 1 Center for Round 2 of the Wrangler Long Live Cowboys Classic on Sunday, Aug. 9, at 1:45 p.m. PDT.

All seeded riders for the event will automatically advance, accompanied by any of the 35 invited competitors who logged a qualified ride in Round 1. The 12 bull riders with the top combined ride scores following the first two rounds will then advance to the championship round, also on Sunday afternoon.
