Field Set for Finals in Caldwell

CALDWELL, Idaho –Aug. 15, 2014 – Rodeo action will conclude at the Caldwell Night Rodeo on Saturday and several contestants that were here Friday night are now staying over and hoping to leave town with a championship.

In the bareback riding, Casey Breuer from Mandan, N.D., was 80 points on Powder River Rodeo’s After Midnight to move into fifth place. Breuer is six points behind the man in first place, Brian Bain from Powell Butte, Ore.

Erich Rogers from Round Rock Ariz., and Cory Petska from Marana, Ariz., had the best time of the night in team roping at 6.0 seconds. They finished second in the first round and are now fourth in the overall standings with a total time of 10.6.

Heith DeMoss from Heflin, La., is having the best season of his career and he continued that here. He is currently ranked third in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings and added $1,900 to that with a second place finish in the first round. DeMoss rode C5 Rodeo’s Black Hills for 82 points Friday and has a good shot at winning his first Caldwell Night Rodeo Championship.

Nancy Hunter remains in the lead in the women’s barrel race, but six women that made their second runs here on Friday are going to try to overtake her tomorrow. The fastest time of the night went to Taylor Jacob from Carmine, Texas who won the first round. Jacob stopped the clock in 17.19 seconds and has a total time of 34.52, five-hundredths of a second slower than Hunter.

Idaho will be well represented in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel race with Megan McLeod from Star and Kali Parker from Wendell. They both had solid runs Friday and will enter Saturday’s rodeo in 12th and 9th place respectively.

World standings leader Kali Bass from Kissimmee, Fla., reigning world champion Sherry Cervi from Marana, Ariz., and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Michele McLeod from Whitesboro, Texas, also are in contention for championships.

The local crowd got noisy when Brady Portenier rode for eight-seconds in the bull riding. Portenier calls Caldwell home and became the third rider from the rodeo to get a score. His 71-point ride on Powder River Rodeo’s Captain America earned him $2,383 and he will be a fan favorite at during the final round.

Rodeo competition continues here on Saturday with the Final performance beginning at 8 p.m. where champions will be crowned.
