Leme Wins Fifth Event of 2020 with League-High 94-Point Ride

By: Easton Colvin

SALT LAKE CITY – In the shadow of Utah’s state capitol building, world No. 1 Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil) finished the 2020 TicketSmarter Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires, with a bang. The Brazilian’s championship round ride had the socially distanced crowd erupting inside Days of ’47 Arena.

Leme entered the championship round trailing Daylon Swearingen (Piffard, New York) by 0.75 points after putting together an 87.5 point ride on Rudy Can Do (Bierema Rodeo Inc.), a bull that bucked him off just weeks ago in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

In the championship round draft, Leme drafted Chiseled (Flinn/D&H Cattle Co.), creating a world No. 1 bovine vs. world No. 1 rider matchup. Exploding from the chute, Leme showed why he’s dominated the competition this year, matching Chiseled jump for jump and turn for turn, to the tune of 94 points – the highest marked ride in PBR competition in 2020.

“It’s hard to explain,” said Leme. “This ride was important for my career. It is another win, another round win, but I’ve got to keep battling for the world title. I hope I’ve got more left for this season.”

The fifth event win of Leme’s season, and 11th round win, earned him $34,126.05 and 122.5 points.

Leme was followed by his countryman Lucas Divino (Nova Crixas Goias, Brazil) who turned in a perfect 2-for-2 performance on Saturday. After bucking off in 7.8 seconds on Friday night, Divino took care of business on Smoke Show (Humps and Hornz/Sis ‘N’ Stan/KMH) for 87 points in Round 2.

Drafting Soup in a Group (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Wilks Ranch) in the championship round paid off the Brazilian, as he made the 8 for a score of 90.5 points.

The second place finish earned Divino $15,452.33 and 65 world points. The points were enough to leapfrog Divino over Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) for the No. 6 spot in the world.

The leader heading into the championship round thanks to an 88.5-point trip on Foghorn Leghorn (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/WSM Auctioneers) in Round 2, Daylon Swearingen earned the first pick in the bull draft, taking Sky Harbor (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Wilks Ranch).

But the son of legendary bull Pearl Harbor proved too much for Swearingen, who hit the dirt in 2.98 seconds.

But his performance from Rounds 1 and 2 gave the New York cowboy third place. Taking home $10,952.12 and 59.5 world points, Swearingen now sits at No. 4 in the world standings, just 34.84 points behind 2019 World Champion Jess Lockwood (Volborg, Montana).

Washington’s Derek Kolbaba (Walla Walla, Washington) ended the weekend in fourth place. Taking on Keno (Chad Berger Bucking Bulls) in Round 2, Kolbaba was marked 88.5 points.

Kolbaba went on to pick one of his favorite adversaries, three-time World Champion bucking bull SweetPro’s Bruiser (D&H Cattle Co./Buck Cattle Co.) as his championship round mount. But Bruiser proved his namesake, tossing Kolbaba in 7.19 seconds and earning a 46.5-point bull score, tied for highest of the event.

Bruiser’s performance tied him with Chiseled’s 46.5-point bull score, splitting the YETI Built for the Wild Bull of the Event honors.

Kolbaba was in the cash and world points, taking home $7,460.18 and 40 world points, and is now No. 20 in the world.

After splitting the Round 1 win on Friday night, Brennon Eldred (Sulphur, Oklahoma) took home fifth place in the event. Going 0-for-2 on Saturday night, Eldred’s 88.25 points from Friday night held him in the No. 5 spot.

The finish earned Eldred $5,914.09 and 27 world points. The points move the Oklahoman to No. 28 in the world standings.
