Lucas Wins PBR Challenger Series Event in Fort Worth, Texas

By: Kacie Albert

FORT WORTH, Texas – In front of a captivated Sunday afternoon crowd inside the iconic Cowtown Coliseum, there was no rider more dominant than Joao Henrique Lucas (Bastos, Brazil) for the third PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Challenger Series residency event in Fort Worth, Texas. With his efforts headlined by a Round 1 win, Lucas won the PBR Sunday at Cowtown.

Going 1-for-2, Lucas was a near picture of perfection in Round 1. Covering Dan Post (Cord McCoy/Bill McCarty), Lucas was marked an event-best 86 points.

While Lucas was unable to punctuate his performance with a score, bucked off by Tornado Time (Silent 7/Hilton Bull Co.) in the championship round, the reserved Brazilian’s opening-round score was enough to clinch the victory.

Lucas left Fort Worth having earned 37 Challenger Series points.

Texas Rattlers sensation Ednelio Almeida (Cacoal, Brazil) was second, garnering 24 Challenger Series points.

Matched up with Bandit (D&H Cattle/Flinn) in Round 1, Almeida reached the requisite 8 for 80.5 points.

Almeida, however, fell just short of his third Challenger Series victory when he was bested by Texas Train (Silent 7/Hilton Bull Co.) in the final round.

Fellow Texas Rattlers rider and 2002 PBR World Champion Ednei Caminhas (Indaiatuba, Brazil) was third.

Caminhas’ 72.5-point ride atop Boomerang (Cord McCoy/Win Rock) in Round 1 garnered him 13 Challenger Series points.

As the only other rider to deliver a score Sunday afternoon, Ryan Estrada (Stephenville, Texas) was fourth.

Estrada, who was marked 66 points on Outlaw (Magee/DD Bucking Bulls) in Round 1, earned 8 Challenger Series points.

An ABBI (American Bucking Bull Inc.) Derby competition was also held in conjunction with the PBR Challenger Series event inside Cowtown Coliseum. This phase in ABBI competition is the transition from bucking with a dummy to bucking under a bull rider. When ABBI bulls graduate from the Futurity system, they are then classed as three-year-old Derby bulls.

Renegade (IB Rockin Cattle/ Hilton Bull Co.) won the Derby event with 89.52 points for just shy of $6,500 in prize money.

House Fire (Lyndon Flinn) placed second with 89.04 points to earn nearly $4,500, and Highwire (Risen Cattle Co.) collected more than $3,000 for a third-place finish with 88.16 points.

Sucker Punch (Julian/Staci Addison/Buck Cattle), who won the Limited Classic event two weeks prior, landed fourth place with an 88.08-point performance for $2,145, and Back Time (Young Cattle Company) was not far behind with an even 88 points to round out the Top 5 in fifth and take home more than $1,700.

The PBR Challenger Series residency at Cowtown Coliseum continues Sunday, July 3. Action gets underway at 2:00 p.m. CT.
