Martin Tops Tie-Down Roping Field at Cody Stampede

CODY, Wyo. – Cooper Martin got one step closer to his second Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualification in tie-down roping at the third performance of the Cody Stampede.

Martin, who just celebrated his 21st birthday in May roped and tied his calf in 7.6 second to best a field of over 100 ropers that have competed here so far. There are 10 more scheduled to rope on the Fourth of July and unless one of them is faster than Martin, he will win the biggest single paycheck of the “Cowboy Christmas” run in the United States.

There are a slew of rodeos surrounding the summer holiday, but Cody’s is among the richest. As contestants are only here to compete once, the prize money is all paid in that round making it the biggest one-header in July.

Tie-down roping is one of the most difficult rodeo events to break into. It requires a talented and athletic horse along with great hand-eye coordination and athleticism in the contestant. At last year’s NFR Martin was the lone newcomer who put his talents up against 14 other seasoned veterans.

He left Las Vegas and rodeo’s championships last December with over $65,000 in earnings. Adding that to what he won during the regular season, he finished ninth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings with $151,284,

This year has not started out the way that he had hoped, but a big win in Stampede Park could certainly turn that around. Prior to coming here he was 28th in the world, and about $16,000 outside of the top 15. Cooper stands to win over $8,000 even if he drops to second place after the final performance here on Wednesday. That will certainly help move him up and give him an opportunity to go back to Las Vegas this December to compete for a world title.

Competition at the 99th annual Cody Stampede concludes on July 4th, Wednesday, at 5 p.m.
