News & Notes from the Rodeo Trail, October 5

Star bareback horse Scarlet’s Web out of the Pete Carr Pro Rodeo stable passed away Sept. 26. She was 19.

“That horse bucked every time, bucked the right way and gave cowboys the opportunity to showcase their riding ability,” Pete Carr said. “That’s why they always put her in the 10th round and why they won so many go-rounds on her.”

Scarlet’s Web was selected to compete in 13 Wrangler National Finals Rodeos – 2007-2019. Cowboys won six rounds on her at the Wrangler NFR – 2007, Round 6 (90 points); 2008, Round 10 (90 points); 2012, Round 5 (88.5 points); 2013, Round 10 (86.5 points); 2017, Round 10 (88 points); and 2018, Round 10 (89.5 points).

Tilden Hooper won on Scarlet’s Web at the NFR in 2008 and 2018.

“That was a great horse,” said Hooper, who is headed to his seventh NFR in December. “In 2008, that was my first NFR and I won on her, and then to come back a decade later and be able to win on her again was special. Those are the best horses in the world, and that speaks volumes about that horse.

“She was the kind you wanted to ride. She went out there and gave you a chance to win first every time. She was going to leave hard and finish strong and get up in the air and give you a chance to show off and make the best ride you can. She felt like how you want one to feel if you could dream it up as a bareback rider.”

Scarlet Web’s competed in Round 6 of the 2019 Wrangler NFR at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Tim O’Connell had an 88-point trip on her to finish fourth in the round and earn $11,000. Clint Laye had an 85-ride on Scarlet’s Web in Round 10, and she was retired.

“She was easy going,” Carr said. “She would just roll in there and do her job and she loved to buck. She was one of those horses who was one in a million that you come across, and I will probably never have another one like her. Everybody loved Scarlet, and everybody wanted to get on Scarlet. She was going to give you every opportunity she could to let you make a great ride and win a bunch of money. Those are the kind of horses guys want to come get on every day.”

Registration for the 2020 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association National Convention is now open at www.prcaconvention.com. The National Convention – a component to the annual Wrangler® National Finals Rodeo, is scheduled for November 30-December 3, 2020.

The gathering will be hosted in two iconic buildings in Fort Worth, Texas – the Omni Fort Worth Hotel and the adjacent Fort Worth Convention Center. Visit Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Sports Commission are the presenting partners for the 2020 PRCA National Convention.

“This has been a year of extraordinary change, and we are excited with the convention we have planned,” said George Taylor, chief executive officer of the PRCA. “This convention, for many of our members, is the start of the NFR. It’s a time for us to come together, share ideas and showcase our amazing members. We will be reviewing the past season and learning and sharing best practices.”

The 2020 Wrangler NFR is returning to its birthplace in Texas. The rodeo performances will happen at Globe Life Field in Arlington, December 3-12, while the surrounding NFR Experience will be anchored in Fort Worth.

“Fort Worth is proud to co-host the NFR Experience with our neighbor Arlington,” said Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price. “We can’t wait to show off our Western Heritage. The legends of cowboys and cowgirls live here.”

Presentation topics for the “Challenge of Change” convention will focus on the uncertainty ProRodeo endured and overcame throughout the 2020 season and the changes facing professional sports in the years ahead. As in prior years, the convention will feature an annual address from Taylor. The event also will include the PRCA Member Tradeshow as well as several topical breakout sessions. Keynote speakers and details of the breakout sessions will be shared over the coming weeks.

The PRCA National Convention is the annual meeting of the organization’s members on the achievements of the prior year and announcing new strategic areas of improvement. The evenings are highlighted with the fan favorite PRCA Welcome Reception set for December 1. The PRCA Annual Awards Banquet, where recognition is given for the extraordinary achievements of PRCA members, will be December 2. The Convention will close on December 3 with Rodeo Committee meetings and the Contract Personnel Council meetings. Convention attendees may register for the 2020 PRCA Convention by visiting www.prcaconvention.com.

The registration for the annual Contract Personnel Tradeshow will open on Tuesday, October 6.
