Nobles Collects First-Ever Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Win in Denver

By: Mandi McCary

DENVER – As three nights of nonstop action at the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s (PWVT) Denver PBR Chute Out at the National Western Stock Show concluded on Wednesday night, Lane Nobles (West, Texas) captured a career-first, triumphant win.

The historic event in Denver showcased a unique format for fans. The initial draw featured 90 riders competing in Round 1, which split riders into two groups across the first two nights of competition.

On Monday night, 45 riders each attempted one bull. Round 1 then concluded on Tuesday with the remaining 45 riders who did not compete Monday attempting one bull each.

As Round 2 began on Wednesday, the Top 30 riders from Round 1 readied themselves to each face another bull in hopes of punching their ticket to the championship round. The 15 bull riders with the top combined ride scores following the first two rounds then advanced to the final championship round.

In Round 2, Nobles was paired with Buck Wild (4B Bucking Bulls), firing out of the chutes for an impressive 87 points.

The 30-year-old Texan then bested Two Socks (Dakota Rodeo/ Mark Baker/ Clay Struve/ Chad Berger) in the championship round for 88.5 points to clinch the win.

For his 3-for-3 week, Nobles leaves Colorado with $19,844.48 and 35 world points.

Josh Frost (Randlett, Utah) was hot on Nobles’ heels, capturing second place in Denver.

The Utah cowboy, cousin to late rodeo legend Lane Frost, conquered House of Pain (4L & Diamond S Rodeo Company) in Round 2 for a solid 84 points.

He then set his sights on the championship round and delivered the highest ride score of the night, turning in 90 points aboard his bovine opponent Jackpot (Frontier Rodeo Company).

In addition to 27 world points, Frost collected a check for $15,282.53 for his 3-for-3 performance.

Twenty-five-year-old Wyatt Rogers (Coweta, Oklahoma) kept the 3-for-3 streak going by besting his Round 2 opponent Hooper Scooper (Shuler Bucking Bulls) for 84.5 points and then making the 8 aboard Hammer (M Rafter E Bucking Bulls) in the championship round for 86.5 points.

Rogers earned $7,679.28 and 12 world points for his strong third-place finish.

Round 1 winner Clayton Sellars (Fruitland Park, Florida) secured a fourth-place finish overall after a setback late Wednesday night.

Despite a commanding ride aboard Pillow Drift (Clay Struve/ Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger) in Round 2 for 86 points, Sellars turned in a less-than-optimal ride score of 78.5 points aboard Elvis (Shuler Bucking Bulls) in the final round of the night.

Sellars’ efforts earned him 15 world points and a check for $7,831.35.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Missouri young gun Bob Mitchell (Steelville, Missouri).

In Round 2, Mitchell was paired with Otis (M Rafter E/ High View Cattle), launching from the chutes but remaining in complete control to turn in an 83-point ride.

The championship round saw a matchup of Mitchell and Skull Crusher (Shuler Bucking Bulls) with the 19-year-old rider again dominating for 87.5 points.

Mitchell’s first visit to the Denver event sends him back home to Missouri with seven world points and a check for $5,246.24 for his 3-for-3 week.

The talented bull riders of the PWVT will next head to Cedar Park, Texas, for the Cedar Park Chute Out at the H-E-B Center Jan. 14-15. Additionally, in a double-up weekend, the PWVT will also be in Portland, Oregon, for the Portland Classic on Jan.15 at Moda Center.
