Olds Alberta’s Clayton Whiteside Wins Class 2 Vintage Tractor Pull

Calgary – It was a special day for Clayton Whiteside of Olds, Alberta as he took home first place in the class 2 category on Monday, July 12th at the Calgary Stampede’s Vintage Tractor Pull. His 1953 Farmall Super M impressed with a total pull of 308 feet, granting him first place, 7 feet ahead of the second-place runner up.

This is Whiteside’s first time competing in the Vintage Tractor Pull at the Calgary Stampede, but he is no newcomer to the world of Vintage Tractor Pull. His grandfather, Gord Farr started pulling in the 90’s and his father, Scott Whiteside got involved shortly after that.

“I think it means a lot to them to have me pulling here now and to keep it going, keep the younger generation a little bit in to it,” says Whiteside.

Every year Whiteside’s grandpa was competing at the Calgary Stampede he would come down and watch, dreaming of one day being involved. “Always been a dream of mine to pull here and it finally came true,” says Whiteside.

The Vintage Tractor Pull is all about highlighting beautifully restored tractors that were built before the 1960’s and showcasing their power and speed. They compete pulling a weighted sled in six different weight classes in this popular invitational event.

The best advice Whiteside was given when he first started out at 16 years old was to “have fun, it’s not all about winning. It’s just about going out and doing it.”

Whiteside added “the biggest part is you don’t have to buy a tractor that’s all fully painted, as long as it runs good you can go to tractor pulls all over the place.”

His first vintage tractor was a gift from this grandfather on his 16th birthday. It wasn’t painted but it got his foot in the door and allowed him to compete every year until he finally qualified for the Calgary Stampede; ultimately taking home first in his class.
