Ostashek Wins Third Iteration of Cody Snyder Charity Bullbustin’ in Calgary, Alberta

By: Kacie Albert

CALGARY, Alta. – As a raucous crowd watched on at Grey Eagle Resort & Casino in Calgary, Alberta, home province hopeful Micheal Ostashek (Edson, Alberta) shined, winning the third iteration of the Cody Snyder Charity Bullbustin’, part of the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada Touring Pro Division.

Ostashek quickly gathered momentum in Round 1 when he delivered what would tie for the second-best score of the round, marked 85 points atop Twist of Fate (Thompson Rodeo Livestock).

In the championship round, Ostashek drew Langham Kid (Two Bit Bucking Bulls) as his final animal athlete opponent. A picture of perfection, Ostashek reached the requisite 8 for a career-best 89.5 points to clinch his first event win in more than seven years.

Ostashek’s golden finish earned him a crucial 28.33 national points, propelling him from No. 16 to No. 11 in the heated battle to be crowned the 2022 PBR Canada Champion. He now trails No. 1 Blake Smith (Abbey, Saskatchewan) by 106 points.

After being shut out at the opening two Touring Pro Division events held in Calgary earlier in the week, Smith reclaimed his winning ways, finishing eighth to collect 3.33 national points.

Going 1-for-2, Smith rode Tar Pit (Two Bit Bucking Bulls) for 85 points in Round 1. The Austin Gamblers contender extended his lead over No.2 Lonnie West (Cadogan, Alberta) to 25.33 points.

Dakota Buttar (Kindersley, Saskatchewan) and Nick Tetz (Calgary, Alberta) tied for second.

For 2020 PBR Canada Champion Buttar he covered Dealing After Midnight (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 84 points in Round 1, before going the distance atop Middle Age Crazy (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 89 points in the final round.

Buttar’s silver effort earned him 14 national points. Maintaining his No. 10 rank in the national standings, the Saskatchewan man climbed within 86.83 points of No. 1 Smith.

Should Buttar continue his climb and be crowned the 2022 PBR Canada Champion this November in Edmonton, Alberta, he would join an elite group of riders to have won the honor multiple times. Thus far, only three riders have achieved the feat including three-time Champion Aaron Roy (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) and two-time title holders Zane Lambert (Ponoka, Alberta) and Cody Coverchuk (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan).

For 2018 PBR Canada Rookie of the Year Tetz, his flawless 2-for-2 outing included an 84.5-point score atop Without Warning (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) in Round 1 and an 88.5-point ride on Lord Fear (Vold Rodeo) in the championship round.

Tetz collected 13 national points and is now ranked No.15 in the nation, 121.33 points behind the top position.

Fourth was Keyshawn Whitehorse (McCracken Spring, Utah), garnering 6 national points.

The newly inked Arizona Ridge Riders member was flawless in Calgary riding Christopher (Vold Rodeo) for 84 points and Built Tough (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 87.5 points.

Rounding out the Top 5 in fifth was Ashton Sahli (Red Deer, Alberta).

Sahli earned 4 national points for his 84-point ride on Red Pearl (Vold Rodeo) and 86.5-point score aboard Almost Gone (Thompson Rodeo Livestock).

In the bull pen, Happy Camper (Two Bit Bucking Bulls) bucked supreme. The two-time and reigning PBR Canada Bull of the Year was crowned the Bull of the Event after earning a 45.5-point score for his 4.38-second buckoff of Jake Gardner (Fort St. John, British Columbia) in the championship round.

The 2022 PBR Canada season will continue on July 8 in Calgary, Alberta, for the Cody Snyder Charity Bullbustin’. Action at Grey Eagle Resort & Casino will begin at 7 p.m. MDT.
