Petri Back on Track with Round 2 Win in Jacksonville

By: Darci Miller

PUEBLO, Colo. – In March, Jesse Petri’s first Unleash The Beast event went more than a little bit awry.

A little more than two months later, he’s back on track.

Petri won Round 2 of the PBR Bad Boy Mowers Invitational, presented by Union Home Mortgage in Jacksonville, Florida, with 88.75 points on Hard Shot, for the first premier series round win of his career.

He then went on to ride Apper’s Mind Freak for 89 points in the championship round. Despite bucking off of Mule Train in 2.86 seconds in Round 1, he finished in third place overall in the event.

Petri entered Jacksonville with just three rides on the Unleash The Beast in 10 attempts. On Sunday alone, he very nearly doubled his total.

“This bull is big, strong. He’s moving that outside leg, taking the fight to Apper’s Mind Freak,” 2002 World Finals event winner J.W. Hart told Craig Hummer on the CBS Sports Network broadcast. “Really good ride. Good to see this kid come alive when the chips are down.”

Jacksonville was Petri’s fifth career Unleash The Beast event, and his third-place finish bests his prior career-high of sixth place.

He finished sixth in his debut event in Glendale, Arizona, in March, where he rode Vertigo Spy for 87 points in Round 1. Then, however, came the problem.

He rode Rack City Dreamin for 63.25 points in Round 2, but had nowhere to go during his get-off. Petri and Rack City Dreamin wound up towards the side of the arena fencing, and Petri was stepped on during his dismount. He was then transported to a local hospital, where he says he was treated for a lacerated liver, a bruised lung and a broken rib. He also needed 10 stitches for a laceration on his right free hand.

The 2020 Rookie of the Year contender was sitting in third place at the time of his injuries, but he could not accept his re-ride option or compete in the championship round, ultimately finishing in sixth place.

“I’m pissed that happened at my first event,” Petri said at the time. “I was really wanting to show out.”

Petri was out for about six weeks, returning in Nampa, Idaho, last month, where he rode Livin’ On A Prayer in Round 2 for 84.25 points. He then went a month between qualified rides.

Petri earned 81 points for his performance in Jacksonville and is now ranked No. 22 in the world. He’s also ranked No. 3 in the Rookie of the Year race, 173.17 points behind leader Colten Fritzlan, who did not compete in Jacksonville due to injury.

2016 World Champion Cooper Davis won the event and the championship round with a 91.75-point ride on Mike’s Motive, while 2018 World Champion Kaique Pacheco finished fourth to overtake Jose Vitor Leme (0-for-2) for the world No. 1 ranking.
