PRCA for the Record: Guymon

The Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo has a tradition of persevering through hard times, and the 2020 rodeo is no exception.

Guymon’s rodeo started during the Depression Era of the early 1930s, when the region was the epicenter of the Dust Bowl and locals were looking for a way to bring visitors to town and celebrate in the midst of hard times.

Originally scheduled for May 1-3, Guymon is opening its gates Aug. 21-23, and ProRodeo athletes will have a different kind of “hard times” on their minds – rodeo records that are hard to beat.

Only three records have been broken in Guymon over the last five years. One of the most-recent records was set by tie-down roper Tuf Cooper in 2017 with a 6.8-second run in the second round. The Texas cowboy went on to win the 2017 all-around world title with $341,560, his fourth career world title.

Cooper is also a three-time tie-down roping world champion (2011-12, 2014) with 11 qualifications to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2008-15, 2017-19) and three to the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping (2017-19). Since his rookie year in 2008, Cooper has won more than $2.6 million.

Cooper, 30, is on track to expand his ProRodeo legacy, sitting third in the PRCA | RAM World Standings for tie-down roping and seventh for steer roping.

Fans can watch cowboys try to break Cooper’s record, and the rest, by tuning in to the PRCA on the Cowboy Channel Plus App, Aug. 21 at 9:30 p.m. (ET), Aug. 22 at 4 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., and Aug. 23 at 4 p.m. The rodeo can also be watched on The Cowboy Channel.
