PRCA for the Record: Hunter Herrin Dazzled in San Antonio
Hunter Herrin has made plenty of big-time runs throughout his 17-year ProRodeo career. A few of the most memorable moments have come on the dirt in the AT&T Center at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.
It was 2016 when Herrin put together a 6.6-second run to break the rodeo record, just a year later he tied his own record. He said there’s something special about backing into the box in San Antonio.
“I’m not sure if it’s because I’m comfortable down there or what,” said Herrin, an 11-time Wrangler NFR qualifier. “There’s just some rodeos where you feel like when you enter or show up that you just have a little more confidence than most places. San Antonio is definitely one of those places for me.”
Five times during Herrin’s career he has placed in the top three at San Antonio. He said his run in 2016 was a homecoming of sorts, where everything came together perfectly.
“In 2016, I had leased a horse from Agnes Ohl, who is Cody Ohl’s mom,” he said. “It was a horse that I had previously owned, we called him Hustler. I picked him up about a week before San Antone started.
“I rode him at Jackson (Miss.), then rode him down there in San Antonio. It was just a pretty great reunion between the two of us. It was one of the better runs I’ve probably ever made.”
Herrin will return to San Antonio this season looking to one up his record and get his 2022 season started with a bang. He said there’s not a better place out there for that to happen.
“We have just kind of picked along so far to start the season,” Herrin said. “But we need a rodeo that will really set the tone and get things rolling here in 2022. I don’t see why this weekend wouldn’t be the proper time. So, hopefully I can go down there and get things started off the right way.”
The action from San Antonio will be broadcast live on The Cowboy Channel and streamed on the PRCA on The Cowboy Channel Plus App, Feb. 10-26.
