PRCA for the Record: Jake Orman Recalls Record Run in Denver

Team roping is an exact science, where everything must come together perfectly for a qualified time, the margin for error becomes even more slim if you want to be fast.

Jake Orman and Will Woodfin put together one of those picture-perfect runs in 2018 at the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo in Denver. The duo clocked a 3.5-second run to not only win Round 2 but set the rodeo record.

“It’s not a very high percentage run at all, it happens in a blur,” said Orman, 30. “We just happened to draw a good steer, he came out to the right, so it made it happen just that much faster.”

The previous record was set by Shain Sproul and Kinney Harrell in 2005 with their 3.7-second run. Orman said the record night still replays in his head even three years later.

“I think I broke the barrier on the first run, we came back in the second round and had a steer that we had watched go before,” Orman said. “He was slow and a little bit to the right, so we knew we had a chance to be fast on him. When I headed him, he hit square fast and Will heeled him effortlessly, it happened fast. To this day that’s the fastest I’ve ever been at a PRCA rodeo.”

It’s a run that he said he’ll always remember because of just how perfectly everything came together.

“Anytime you are three it’s going to stick with you throughout your career,” Orman said. “You don’t get to be three seconds very often. So, when it does happen it’s pretty special and especially at a rodeo like that.”

The National Western Stock Show & Rodeo wasn’t held last year due to COVID-19, so Orman is excited to get back to Denver with hopes of one breaking his record.

“I’m excited to go back up to the stock show this year, my partner Brye Crites and I are going to be up on (Jan.) 20th,” Orman said.
