PRCA for the Record: Kennewick

By Matt Naber

While the format has shifted over the years, the prestige remains the same for the Horse Heaven/Kennewick (Wash.) Round-Up. Since 1954 many of ProRodeo’s top contenders for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo have hit the Kennewick arena but only the best left their mark by setting a rodeo record.

Steer wrestler Clay Cowan’s 3.1-second run has been the fastest in Kennewick’s history since 2008.

The South Dakota cowboy is a five-time qualifier for the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo (2005, 2007, 2010-12). The 2012 RAM NCFR was particularly good for Cowan as he won the all-around and steer wrestling titles.

From 2004 through 2013, the Badlands Circuit cowboy won $171,485 thanks to winning the Cherokee (Iowa) Chamber PRCA Rodeo three times (2007, 2009 and 2011) and splitting the win at the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo in Rapid City, S.D., in 2013.

Cowboys will have a chance to break Cowan’s record, and the rest, Aug. 20-24, while competing for their share of the prize money at one of the few remaining chances to score points on the ProRodeo Tour.

While the single-run records are cut and dried, Kennewick has shifted from being a one-header, two-header and three-header for most of the events multiple times – making some records in the average impossible to break. With that in mind, below is the list of current records at the Horse Heaven/Kennewick Round-Up.
