PRCA for the Record: Sikeston

Often, ProRodeo records are broken a little at a time, a half-point here, a fraction of a second there. But every once in a while, a cowboy will up the ante with a record that’s significantly higher.

In 2019, bareback rider Jake Brown shattered the Sikeston (Mo.) Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo record with a 92-point ride on The Cervi Brothers’ Gander Goose. Before Brown’s ride, Sikeston’s record was 90 points, set by Caine Riddle in 2011 and matched by Orin Larsen in 2014.

Brown went on to qualify for his fifth consecutive trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and finished the year 11th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. This season, the Texas cowboy is 12th in the 2020 world standings partially thanks to winning the RAM Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo in Waco and splitting the win at the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa, Texas.

The 2019 Sikeston rodeo was truly one for the record books since barrel racer Jessica Routier broke the last remaining Sikeston record from the 20th century with her 16.02-second run. Sikeston’s previous barrel racing record was 16.04 seconds, set by Melissa Hubier and Nancy Ortlip in 1995 and matched by Patti Higdon in 2002.

A lot has changed since the semi-pro baseball team the Sikeston Stags had to stay on the bench while the VFW Memorial Park hosted the first Sikeston rodeo Sept. 17-20, 1953.

Although the time and location have changed, Sikeston’s rodeo remains one of the biggest ProRodeo events in the Midwest, but only the best leave their mark by setting a rodeo record.

Cowboys will have their chance to top Brown’s Sikeston record, and the rest, while collecting valuable ProRodeo Tour points, Aug. 5-8. Fans can catch all the Sikeston action on the PRCA on the Cowboy Channel Plus App, Aug. 5-8 at 8 p.m. (ET).
