PRCA Weekly Recap: Aug. 3-9

Among the highest scores and fastest runs of the week, three made the record book as ProRodeo athletes competed for the collective $977,538 that was up for grabs at PRCA rodeos held Aug. 3-9.

The fastest times and highest scores might not always make the record book, but they make a lasting memory for fans and competitors. With hundreds of PRCA competitions across the Western Hemisphere, there are plenty of opportunities to make a memorable ride.

Although the prize money differs from one competition to the next, the judging remains consistent across the board.

In addition to the fame that comes with winning the most prize money, each ride was a chance to be the best of the week. Here’s a look at the highest scores and fastest times for each event held Aug. 3-9.

Bareback rider Tim O’Connell made good on his promise to go to war on Saturdaywhen he rode Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Killer Bee for 90 points at the Lawton (Okla.) Rangers Rodeo, Aug. 8. O’Connell’s score matched Lawton’s record that was held by James Boudreau (2003) and Justin McDaniel (2009).

Steer wrestler Gage Hesse posted a 3.5-second run at the Yuma (Colo.) County Fair & Rodeo, Aug. 5.

Team ropers Nelson Wyatt and Levi Lord shattered the previous record of 4.4 seconds at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte, Neb., when they posted a 3.8-second run, Aug. 6.

Two saddle bronc riders made 88.5-point rides last week, one of which set a rodeo record. Riggin Smith topped the Sikeston (Mo.) Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo’s record by a half-point when he rode The Cervi Brothers’ Womanizer for 88.5 points, Aug. 8. Lefty Holman won the final round of the United States Open Xtreme Broncs Match in Faith, S.D., with 88.5 points on Dakota Rodeo’s Bartender.

Tie-down roper Charlie Gibson won Sikeston with a 7.7-second run Aug. 6.

Barrel racer BryAnna Haluptzok made a 13.57-second run at the Sioux Empire Fair Rodeo in Sioux Falls, S.D., Aug. 8.

For three days in a row, Yuma, Colo., witnessed 9.1-second steer roping runs. Thomas Smith’s was on Aug. 4 during the Yuma County Fair & Rodeo, Travis Sheets’ was Aug. 5, and Dalton Walker’s came a day later during the Yuma/Sterling Stand Alone Steer Roping.

Both of last week’s 90-point bull rides happened in Sikeston. Daylon Swearingen rode Stockyards Pro Rodeo’s Silver Lining for 90 points, Aug. 6, and Jeston Mead tied that score a day later on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Rump Shaker.
