PRCA Weekly Recap: Jan. 4-10

With more than $250,000 in prize money and the first opportunity to score valuable ProRodeo Tour points, the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa, Texas, is attracting cowboys from across the country. The high stakes mean fans in the stands and watching from home via The Cowboy Channel witnessed some high scores and fast runs during the first full week of the 2021 calendar year.

The PRCA-sanctioned team roping and barrel racing portions of the Odessa rodeo haven’t happened yet, but the competition runs through Jan. 16 and fans can catch the action live on the PRCA on Cowboy Channel Plus app every night from Jan. 13-16 at 8:30 p.m. (ET).

Bareback rider Mike Solberg leads the pack after posting an 85.5-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Black Cat. Last year, the top bareback riding scores were a pair of record-setting 88-point rides by Jayco Roper and Jake Brown, with Roper on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s South Suds and Brown on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s On Tap With Nutrena.

Steer wrestlers Dalton Massey and Joseph Guze are tied for the lead with 4.3 seconds each. The fastest steer wrestling run at Odessa in 2020 was 3.4 seconds from Cody Devers.

Stetson Wright has the high score in saddle bronc riding, an 86-point ride on Andrews Rodeo’s Yellow Fizz. Last year’s saddle bronc riding winners were Tanner Butner and Parker Fleet with 86.5 points each, with Butner on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Foul Motion and Fleet on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s That’s A Wrap.

Tie-down roper Catfish Brown posted a 7.3-second run to take the lead and tie the Odessa record that was set by Randall Carlisle in 2010. Brown’s time is a half-second faster than what Shad Mayfield won the 2020 rodeo with, 7.8 seconds.

Steer roper Garrett Hale stopped the clock in 8.8 seconds in Round 3 and tied the Odessa record that was set by Brent Lewis in 2018. Hale’s run is a half-second faster than last year’s fastest run in Odessa, 9.3 seconds by Dalton Walker in Round 2.

Two bull riders have notched 84-point rides to grab the No. 1 spot, Boudreaux Campbell on Powder River Rodeo’s Axel and Jace Trosclair on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s No. 72. Colten Fritzlan won Odessa’s bull riding in 2020 with an 88-point ride on Powder River Rodeo’s Hard & Fast.
