PRCA Weekly Recap: May 6-12

By Matt Naber

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – In what can only be called the calm before the summer storm of ProRodeo action, May 6-12 featured eight competitions across the U.S. and Canada. The highlight of the week was the historic Las Vegas Days rodeo, where many of the money-winners have been frequent contenders at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

The second week of May was particularly profitable for rookie Daylon Swearingen. The 19-year-old, Georgia cowboy won the bull riding and bareback riding to claim the all-around title at the Mineral Wells (Texas) PRCA Rodeo. Swearingen had the highest-scored bull ride of the week with 91 points on Rafter G Rodeo’s Market Garden, May 10. That ride combined with his 85-point winning ride on Rafter G Rodeo’s Ankle Biter in bareback riding made for a $2,730 payday and a healthy boost in the 2019 PRCA | RAM World Standings for all-around, from eighth to sixth.

Swearingen is third in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings for bull riding with $30,427 and eighth in bareback riding with $8,784.

With only a few opportunities to win, cowboys were faced with a “go big or go home” situation, and the high scores and fast times reflected that, so here’s a look at the best rides and runs of May 6-12 in the PRCA.

Bareback rider Wyatt Denny scored 86 points on Bar T Rodeo’s Jitter Bug in Las Vegas, May 10.

Two steer wrestlers made 3.7-second runs this week. Chance Howard’s run happened in Mineral Wells, May 9, and Cade Goodman’s was at the Crockett (Texas) Lions Club PRCA Rodeo, May 11.

Team ropers Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira made a 4.2-second run in Mineral Wells, May 9.

Saddle bronc rider Ryder Wright scored 87 points on Bar T Rodeo’s Son Of Sadie in Las Vegas, May 10.

Tie-down roper Kolt Henderson made an 8.4-second run in Crockett, May 10.

Barrel racer Dona Kay Rule clocked in at 15.35 seconds in Crockett, May 9.

PRCA action continues with 14 competitions May 13-19, highlighted by the Redding (Calif.) Rodeo, the 16th stop on the ProRodeo Tour.
