Proctor Leads Team South Point to Victory and is Closer to a New Baby Bedroom

By: Justin Felisko

PUEBLO, Colo. – When Shane Proctor told his wife Haley that he was asked to ride for Team South Point at the Monster Energy Team Challenge, presented by U.S. Border Patrol, by General Manager Colby Yates, she saw a slew of reasons for her husband to commit.

“My wife says if we win, we can get a baby room,” Proctor said with a laugh before the start of Division B competition at the Pendleton Whisky Let ‘Er Buck Saloon at South Point Arena in Las Vegas.

“We are expecting a new daughter in December, so now I just need to ride for baby shoes.”

Proctor is one step closer to having additional funds to renovate a new room at home in Oklahoma after leading Team South Point to a 172.5-0 victory over Team Boot Barn on Sunday morning.

The 2011 PRCA champion put Team South Point (2-1) on his back and single-handedly led it to victory by going 2-for-2.

Proctor began the morning with 86 points on Get Shorty and then followed up with another 86.5 points on Space Monkey.

“Well, we won,” Proctor said. “This game is definitely a learning process for us. The first match went so fast. We ended up making a mistake in the end. But we learned and fixed our mistakes. Everybody on the team is riding well and consistent. When one of us gets bucked off, somebody else is stepping up. It’s been a rollercoaster because we had so many close calls. Like Ty (Wallace) pulling his tail at 7.98. And (Cody) Nance getting called for a slap. They’re trying their guts out, and we got a couple close calls to go our way.

“We’re going to be dominant.”

Proctor had previously ridden Space Monkey for 88 points during his team’s 259.25-171.25 victory over Team Lucas Oil on Saturday night.

“Have you watched this guy’s career?” Yates said on RidePass. “This guy is amazing. I don’t care. He is 35 years old and he still has a lot left in the bucket. He can do this deal, and he is obviously showing you. Stepping up when the time is right. That is the other thing about Shane Proctor. He has been in those situations. He has been in those pressure situations where he has to come above, and rise above the rest, step ahead and pull the weight for his team.”

Proctor is 3-for-4 in the last two games as Team South Point has rattled off two consecutive wins since dropping a 166.5-158 game to Team Pendleton Whisky on Friday night.

He has become a go-to-rider for Yates after the general manager had to scramble to find a replacement for original team captain Cody Teel (right knee) last week.

Proctor has filled in admirably, and Team South Point is on the verge of qualifying for Championship Weekend in Sioux Falls.

South Point is No. 2 in Division B with 2-1 record after going a division-best 7-for-18 in three games.

South Point is slated to face Division-B leading Team Ariat (3-0) on Friday live on CBS Sports Network and RidePass at 9 p.m. ET. South Point then takes on Team Cat (0-3) on Saturday before learning of its Sunday opponent.

The Monster Energy Team Challenge features 12 teams, and two Divisions (A & B). The Top 3 teams in each division, based upon win-loss record, qualify for Championship Weekend and a single-elimination tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on July 10-12 in front of fans.

Following Division A competition, Team Cooper Tires, Team Las Vegas and Team Can-Am have clinched playoff berths.

Team South Point does have some injury concerns with Wallace likely needing an MRI on his left elbow after hurting it during his 2.04-second buckoff against Dusty’s Revenge in the first half. So Team South Point may need to make a roster move if Wallace is unavailable for next weekend.

Yet behind Proctor and Team Captain Nance, Team South Point is one step closer to reaching the playoffs.

“We’re good,” Proctor said. “I’m excited. We all pulled our weight on a different day. I was kind of doubting myself after the first day. But the draws starting going my way. They just need some of the old, dirty, tough guys back. This is our kind of game.”
