Recording Second-Highest Score in PBR History, Kasel Wins 2021 PBR U.S. Border Patrol Invitational

By: Easton Colvin

SAN ANTONIO – For the second time in the 2021 season, 2019 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Rookie of the Year Dalton Kasel (Muleshoe, Texas) rode his way to a perfect 3-for-3 performance and another Unleash The Beast (UTB) tour win, this time in front of a home-state crowd inside AT&T Center in San Antonio.

Punctuating his perfect weekend, Kasel registered the second-highest score in PBR history in the championship round, a 96.75-point ride aboard Woopaa (Barker Bucking Bulls/Hookin’ W Ranch).

Kasel, who won Round 1 on Saturday night with an 89-point ride on Bar Fly (CG Bucking Bulls/Big Rafter Rodeo), drew Off Campus (Dakota Rodeo/Brian & Ashley Pintar/Clay Struve/Chad Berger) to start Round 2 on championship Sunday.

The Texan burst from the chutes on the back of the black bull, matching his counterpart jump-for-jump on the way to an 88.5-point score and second in the round.

Drafting first in the championship round, the 22-year-old made the obvious choice of world No. 1 bucking bull Woopaa, which paid dividends as the two combined for an astronomical 96.75-point ride.

The second-highest score in PBR history, trailing only Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil), who bested Woopaa for 97.75 points in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in August, provided Kasel with his second premier series event win of the season.

Woopaa’s out was marked 47.25 points, tying his second-highest mark of the 2021 season, and was the third time this season the bovine earned a 47.25-point score. The out also earned Woopaa his league-leading seventh YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event honor of the season.

Kasel tallied 155 world points, which cracked him into the Top 10 in the world, moving him seven spots to No. 8. He also earned $30,591.21 with the victory.

Brazilian Junior Patrik Souza (Sonora, Brazil), who was just 0.64 seconds away from joining Kasel with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, finished second.

Souza was a part of the trio of riders to tie for second in Round 1 on Saturday night when he rode Cliff Hanger (CG Bucking Bulls/Big Rafter Rodeo) for 88.5 points.

Silver Lining (Stockyards/Winston/Melton Bull Co) propelled Souza to an 88.25-point ride in Round 2 on Sunday, giving him the second pick in the championship round draft.

Selecting Bubba G (Dakota Rodeo/Brian & Ashley Pintar/Clay Struve/Chad Berger) for his championship-round mount, Souza blew out of the chutes on top of a white bovine blur. The two danced nearly to the 8-second mark, but the Brazilian was tossed at the 7.32-second mark.

Souza took home 83.5 world points and $14,609.14, and is now No. 11 in the world standings. The finish was also enough to bounce Chase Dougherty (Decatur, Texas) from the lead in the 2021 PBR Rookie of the Year race, where Souza now sits.

Requiring a stellar performance to maintain his spot on the elite UTB tour, Brazilian Manoelito de Souza Junior (Itamira, Brazil) finished the two-day event in third.

Another member of the second-place trio in Round 1 thanks to an 88.5-point trip on Crossover (Shuler Bucking Bulls), Souza bested Party Animal (Stockyards/Pritchett Ranch/Melton Bull Co) for 87.25 points in Round 2.

The 26-year-old Souza picked up Oilfield Outlaw’s Yellow Feather (Oilfield Outlaw’s Bucking Bulls) in the championship round, but he was thrown from the back of the bovine in 3.92 seconds, which turned into a 46.5-point out for Yellow Feather.

Souza’s weekend netted 68 world points and $11,384.59, propelling him five spots to No. 33 in the world.

Joao Henrique Lucas (Bastos, Brazil) rounded out the Brazilian contingent in the Top 5 on the weekend, finishing fourth.

After he rode Lil Loco (Paradigm Bull Co/Flying High Rodeo Co.) for 88.5 points in Round 1, Lucas was able to get by Just Another Gangster (Stockyards/Winston/Melton Bull Co) in Round 2 to the tune of 86.75 points.

Lucas could not top Born To Sin (Martinez Bucking Bulls, LLC) in the championship round, lasting just 2.57 seconds.

The 51.5 world points earned for the finish moved him from No. 24 to No. 20 in the world standings.

Continuing his march for the 2021 PBR World Championship, 2016 PBR World Champion Cooper Davis (Jasper, Texas) used an injury absence by world No. 1 Jose Vitor Leme and an uncharacteristic 0-for-2 performance from 2018 PBR World Champion and world No. 2 Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) to gain ground.

Fifth place in Round 1 with an 87.75-point on Facetious (Paradigm Bull Company) had Davis in striking distance on championship Sunday, but after bucking off of Midnight Rider (Carr Pro Rodeo) in 6.4 seconds in Round 2, his chances were slim.

Earning a re-ride in the championship round, Davis once again gritted out the 8-second whistle, this time hearing the crowd’s roaring applause and the horn while hanging off the side of Bentley (Viducic Bucking Bulls). The ride was marked 86.75 points, securing Davis’s finish rounding out the Top 5.

Davis earned 50 world points on the weekend and $10,263.53. With the 2021 PBR World Finals looming, the crucial points cut Pacheco’s lead over Davis to only 82.5 points. Leme leads the Texan by 809 points.

Elsewhere in PBR competition, the riders of the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour (PWVT) rode into Hampton, Virginia, where Marcos Gloria (Central de Minas, Brazil) claimed the first PWVT win of his career.

After besting Quarter After (J Bar W) in the opening round for 88.5 points, Gloria took care of business on Wade Rock (Bonafide Bucking Bulls/Diamond M Pro Rodeo) for 88 points to lock in the win.

The only rider to go 2-for-2 at the tour stop, Gloria earned 41 world points and now sits in the No. 58 spot in the world standings.

PBR’s finest were also hard at work abroad this weekend, with the PBR Canada Cup Series in action in Grande Prairie, Alberta, and PBR Australia Monster Energy Tour returning to Rockhampton, Queensland.

In Canada, after beginning his 2021 season stateside, Peace Country contender Jake Gardner (Fort St. John, British Columbia) made his return to home soil in triumphant fashion. As the lone rider to go a perfect 3-for-3, Gardner won his career-first elite Cup Series event at the PBR Grande Prairie BuckWild.

In Round 1, Gardner was quick to strike, covering Oldsmobile (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle/Leitch Cattle Co.) for 82 points.

Positioned sixth on the event leaderboard ahead of Championship Sunday, Gardner went head-to-head against Blue Blood (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle/Rank Pen Cattle Co.) for an 83-point score.

With the second pick in the championship-round bull draft, Gardner selected 2021 PBR Canada Bull of the Year contender Lil’ Hooch (Flying High Rodeo Co.).

He covered the striking bovine athlete for a championship round-best 89 points to win.

In addition to topping in the main event, Gardner finished second in the PBR Grande Prairie BuckWild’s accompanying 5/5 Bucking Battle. As one of two riders to record a score in the special round, Gardner outlasted Wolf Bait (Vold Rodeo) for an 84.5-point score.

Gardner earned 96 national points for his efforts, allowing him to crack the Top 10 in the Canadian standings after beginning the second Cup Series event of the year ranked No. 26. Rising 17 positions, Gardner is now No. 9 in the feverish title race, 109.83 points behind No. 1 Dakota Buttar (Kindersley, Saskatchewan).

Since making his debut on home soil last weekend on the Touring Pro Division in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Gardner has been perfect in Canadian competition, making the 8 aboard all eight of his bovine athlete opponents. The record for longest ride streak held by any one rider on Canadian soil is 11, last seen in 2020 when Buttar achieved the feat at the start of the campaign.

In Australia, amidst a career-best season on home soil in 2021, Kurt Shephard (Mareeba, Queensland) won his second Monster Energy Tour event of the season after going a near-perfect 2-for-3 at the sixth iteration of the Back to the Heartland Series’ Rockhampton Invitational, surging to No. 2 in the race for the 2021 PBR Australia Championship.

As action got underway at the renowned Great Western Hotel, Shephard covered Iron Jacket (Peter Wallace) for a second-best 85.5 points in Round 1.

In Round 2, Shephard was brought down by Bang Ya Drum (Dunne Bulls) in a hard-fought 4.98 seconds. Despite the buckoff, the 27-year-old earned him one of the coveted six positions in the championship round.

Shephard faced off against the previously unridden Razor Sharp (Peter Wallace), a PBR Australia Bull of the Year contender. In near-picture-perfect form, he reached the 8-second whistle for an event-best 89 points.

Shephard earned a crucial 75.5 national points, surging to the No. 2 position in the national standings. After beginning the tour stop 150.83 points behind No. 1 Aaron Kleier (Clermont, Queensland), Shephard is now within 84.33 points of the top position.

Competing at seven events to date on home soil, Shephard has registered a Top-10 effort in each outing. He has gone a torrid 12-for-17, covering 70.58% of his bovine athlete counterparts.

The 2021 PBR Australia Monster Energy Tour will continue Saturday, October 9 in Mackay, Queensland, for the PBR Mackay Invitational, presented by Kent Hire, at BB Print Stadium.

The toughest athletes on Earth return to competition in less than a week as the elite UTB tour bucks into Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday, October 9.
