Riley Webb Gets First WNFR Playoff Series Win in Arcadia

Riley Webb has been roping on ProRodeo’s biggest stage for years now, but the tie-down roping teenager is just now beginning to check items off his bucket list in the sport of rodeo.

One of those goals was to win his first NFR Playoff Series presented by Pendleton Whisky rodeo. He accomplished that in exciting fashion at the 94th Annual Arcadia All-Florida Championship rodeo on March 13.

Webb laid down a 7.7-second run to take home the title and put $4,822 in his pockets. He said a solid draw set the foundation for his first win in professional rodeo.

“I just tried to go out there and do the best I could, and it worked out for me,” said Webb, 18. “I had a really good calf and was able to score good on him, so that sure helped me out.

“It’s not a round win at the NFR, but it feels good, and you still have to go out there and do your job at the end of the day.”

Headed into the weekend, Webb was sitting third in the Resistol Rookie of the Year Standings, but this win should move him even closer to the top. He said learning from his mistakes early in the winter has him in a good position headed into spring.

“I had a good chance to get the win in Denver I thought, then I kind of messed up that last run,” he said. “I made a couple mistakes this winter. So, hopefully I got those out of the way and learned from those mistakes. When I draw a good calf, I need to execute that and do the best I can every time we back in the box. That’s all you really can do.”

The Denton, Texas, tie-down roper has big goals set for himself in 2022. That includes qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge in his rookie season.

He said while that is obviously priority No.1, he is also just looking forward to a full year of action out on the rodeo trail.

“I think I just need to keep the mistakes to as few as possible to reach that goal (of making the NFR),” Webb said. “This obviously isn’t my first year rodeoing, but I’ve never gotten to be gone the whole summer out there rodeoing. So, I’m excited about that and excited to be able to travel across the country doing what I love to do.”

Other winners at the $155,433 rodeo were all-around cowboy Zachary Jongbloed ($3,243, tie-down roping and steer wrestling); bareback rider Jess Pope (89.5 points on Frontier Rodeo’s Tip Off); steer wrestler Marc Joiner (4.3 seconds); team ropers Shay Dixon Carroll/Evan Arnold (4.9 seconds); saddle bronc rider Rusty Wright (89 points on Frontier Rodeo’s Wolf Pup); barrel racers Kristin Hanchey and Taycie Matthews (16.74 seconds); and bull rider Koby Radley (87 points on Frontier Rodeo’s Bonanza).
