Rookie Logan Cook Draws Lunatic From Hell at Rapid City

Lady Luck is on rookie saddle bronc rider Logan Cook’s side this week. The Texas cowboy drew two of the best broncs in ProRodeo, Big Bend Rodeo’s Major Huckleberry and Burch Rodeo’s Lunatic From Hell.

Cook made an 87-point ride on Major Huckleberry at the Golden Spike PRCA Bronc Riding Classic in Tremonton, Utah, Aug. 26.

“It wasn’t worth much, but it’s definitely tough right now with all the Top 15s everywhere,” Cook said. “It felt good to make a good ride on a tough horse.”

Although that score was only good for a tie for fifth and $818, it gave him a confidence boost for Saturday when he’s set to ride Lunatic From Hell at the Range Days Rodeo in Rapid City, S.D.

“That’s definitely one of the best horses you can get on today, and I’m lucky enough to have the opportunity to get on her,” said Cook, 22. “A lot of guys don’t get a chance at her, so I hope it goes well.”

Lunatic From Hell has a reputation for taking cowboys to the winner’s circle. Shorty Garrett won the New Year’s Eve Buck & Ball in Gillette, Wyo., Dec. 31 with an 88-point ride on Lunatic From Hell, while J.J. Elshere tied the third-highest scored ride in PRCA history when he posted a 93.5-point ride on Lunatic From Hell at the 2019 PRCA Xtreme Broncs Match in Rapid City.

“I try not to think about it too much, it’s just another horse,” Cook said.

The current saddle bronc riding leader in Rapid City is Jacob Kammerer with 84 points.

“It (Tremonton) went well and got the ball rolling, and hopefully I can carry that through Saturday,” Cook said. “It sets your week up when you can jump up there. As long as you’re feeling good it has some momentum behind you to get something going, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Cook is 32nd in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $17,123, about $17,000 away from the Top 15. He’s also 22nd in the ProRodeo Tour Standings so has a chance to qualify for the ProRodeo Tour Finale and score some cash there.

“It’s definitely possible (to make the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo), but it’s a long shot,” Cook said. “The main goal is to keep my head down and do the best I can do. Hopefully I’ll set myself up well for next year, stay in the top 30 and get into San Antonio and Houston, and get a jump on next year and be ready to roll.”

Cook is also No. 2 in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings for saddle bronc riding. Riggin Smith, the rookie standings leader, is out with injury for the remainder of the season after tearing his PCL, MCL and meniscus at the Northwest Montana Fair and Rodeo in Kalispell last week.

Fans can find out what happens when Cook rides Lunatic From Hell by tuning in to the PRCA on the Cowboy Channel Plus App at 9 p.m. (ET).
